It was the same opponent and the same score, but unfortunately for the Lake Erie Monsters (18-19-2-1), they were on the wrong end of the result this time. After defeating the Admirals in Milwaukee on Sunday by a 3-2 score in overtime - the last time the Monsters played prior to Thursday - they fell by the same 3-2 score, also in overtime, to the Admirals (22-14-1-1) at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday. It was a penalty shot by former Monster Chris Mueller that would give Lake Erie the loss.

Milwaukee scored the game's first goal on the power play when Kyle Wilson fired a puck by Monsters goalie Trevor Cann from the right circle at 7:29 of the first period.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Milwaukee until early in the third period.

Justin Mercier evened the game for the Monsters at 1:23 of the third on a wrist shot from the right circle for his eighth goal of the season. Brad Malone and Cameron Gaunce assisted on the goal.

Just three minutes later, Scott Valentine scored on a point shot on the power play to regain the lead for Milwaukee.

The Admirals held their second lead of the contest for just over 10 minutes before Gaunce connected for his third goal of the season at 14:33 of the third period. Gaunce wristed a shot through traffic from the right point that Admirals goalie Jeremy Smith failed to see. Mark Olver and Patrick Rissmiller assisted on the goal that tied the game at 2-2 and eventually forced overtime.

In the extra session, Mueller scored on a penalty shot at 3:33 to secure the Admirals 3-2 victory.

Cann (9-14-1) stopped 21of 24 shots in his first overtime loss of the season. Smith took over the AHL lead in wins with 17 and turned away 23 of 25 Monsters shots in the Admirals net.

The Monsters were 0-4 on the power play, while Milwaukee was 2-5.

The Monsters continue their three-games-in-three-nights stretch Friday night in Grand Rapids, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:00 PM from Van Andel Arena. The game can be heard across Northeast Ohio on ESPN 850 WKNR.

The Monsters return home to host the Oklahoma City Barons Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
