WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 2012 FRONTIER FIELD

GAME #18 - HOME GAME #10 - 7:05 P.M.

SYRACUSE CHIEFS (4-13) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (9-8)

LHP JOHN LANNAN (0-2, 7.50) vs. RHP DARYL THOMPSON (1-2, 3.21)

TIME TO ROC AND 'N ROLL: The Rochester Red Wings tonight open up a 3-game series against Bryce Harper and the Syracuse Chiefs (Nationals), continuing a 5-game homestand that started with a rain-shortened 2-game sweep of Lehigh Valley (Phillies). Following this 3-game set, the Red Wings will hit the road for 8 games, including 4 at Buffalo (Mets) and 4 "at" the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field.

aThe Red Wings Monday enjoyed their first of 5 scheduled offdays, excluding the All-Star Break. In fact, with a pair of rainouts, the Wings played just one game in the last 4 days. Rochester tonight begins a stretch of playing a season-high 28 days in a row through May 22 (barring any rainouts).

ROSTER NEWS: The Red Wings yesterday placed infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka on the 7-Day Disabled List, retroactive to Monday, with a sprained right ankle. Nishioka last played Friday vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies), sustaining the injury while sliding into third base on a triple in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old switch hitter is batting .203 with 8 walks in 16 games. He is tied for the team lead with Joe Benson with 3 steals.

aOutfielder Ben Revere today was recalled by the Minnesota Twins, replacing Josh Willingham, who was placed on the Paternity Leave List.

ROC'IN OUT: At 9-8, the Red Wings are off to their best start since the 2007 club went 13-4 in its first 17 games. The Wings have spent all but 2 days at or above the .500 mark. They were 5-6 on April 15 after a 3-1 loss at Lehigh Valley and 7-8 on Thursday after a 5-3 setback at the Empire State Yankees.

aWith 9 wins, the Red Wings have already matched their win total from April of last year with 7 games remaining. The Wings' next win in April would give them their most in the season-opening since 2008, when they were 13-14.

aThe Red Wings have won 4 of their last 6 after losing a season-high 4 straight April 12-15.

aA win tonight would give the Wings a 3-game winning streak, matching their season high from April 9-11.

aRochester has gone 17 games into the season without playing extra innings, the longest such streak since 2003, when the Red Wings played 11 innings in their 31st game May 7 at Durham (Rays). The Wings won 4-3 that day.

HOME BODIES: The Red Wings are nearing the end of a stretch of playing 16 of their first 20 games at Frontier Field through Thursday. Rochester is also playing 30 of its first 46 contests (65 percent) at Frontier through May 22, including all 8 of the "road" clashes with the Yankees.

aThe Wings are 5-4 in home games and 7-5 at Frontier Field overall.

OPEN SESAME: The Red Wings have won 4 series-opening games in 6 tries, including Friday's 5-2 win vs. Lehigh Valley. Despite the success in those contests, Rochester has went on to win just 2 of its first 6 series. The Wings are 2-2-2 in series overall, including a 2-game sweep at Syracuse to open the season.

EXCITING STUFF: Four of the Red Wings' 9 wins have been of the come-from-behind variety, including Friday's 5-2 triumph vs. Lehigh Valley. In each of the 4 come-from-behind victories, Rochester has rallied from 2 runs down. Not only that, each of the 4 comeback wins has come at Frontier Field.

MORE EXCITING STUFF: Sixteen of the Red Wings' 17 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. Even with a 10-1 loss April 12 vs. Pawtucket, a save has been recorded in each of Rochester's 17 contests. Three different Rochester relievers have recorded at least one save, including Tyler Robertson, and Casey Fien and Anthony Slama, who are both tied for the league lead with 4.

aWings closers have worked more than 1.0 inning in 5 of the 9 saves, including 3 of the last 4. Fien tossed 3.0 innings in a 5-3 victory at Empire State April 16.

READY TO GO ON A RUN: The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 52 runs in 17 games, averaging 3.1 runs per contest. The Wings tonight play the 2nd-lowest scoring team in the league in Syracuse, which has plated 58 runs in 17 contests.

aThe Red Wings last year scored 60 runs through their first 17 contests, but were 2 games worse at 7-10.

aRochester has hit just 7 home runs all year, tied for the league low with Durham (Rays). The Wings have just one homer in the last 8 games, courtesy of Michael Hollimon Thursday at Empire State.

PRESTIGIOUS HARDWARE: The Red Wings tonight resume the heated battle for the Thruway Series Cup, a 3-team race for the best record in upstate New York among Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. Here are the standings of the Hillside Family of Agencies Thruway Series (Cup standings include only games against one another):

Rank Team Record Win %

1. Rochester 4-2 .667

2. Buffalo 4-3 .571

3. Syracuse 1-4 .200

aThe 2011 Thruway Series Cup was hoisted by Syracuse, which posted a combined 21-11 record against Buffalo and Rochester. Buffalo finished 2nd with a 14-18 record while the Red Wings finished 3rd with a 13-19 mark.
