Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - The Charlotte Knights pounded out 17 hits and defeated the Gwinnett Braves 8-2 at Coolray Field on Wednesday night. The Chicago White Sox' Triple-A affiliate stormed out to a 3-0 lead before the G-Braves came to bat in the second inning and tagged right-hander Julio Teheran for four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings.
Luis Durango led the way for the G-Braves, recording a 3-for-5 game out of the leadoff spot. Josh Wilson was the only other Gwinnett hitter to record a multiple-hit night, finishing 2-for-4. Drew Sutton knocked in both G-Braves' runs with a seventh-inning double.
Teheran (L, 2-1) was not his usual dominant self, as he struggled to get through five innings of work. The right-handed ace walked four batters, struck out one and allowed solo home runs to Greg Golson and Conor Jackson.
The Knights struck for a run in the first inning as Hector Gimenez singled home Jim Gallagher. An inning later, the lead grew to 3-0 as Golson belted a solo homer to left and Gallagher doubled to plate Tyler Kuhn.
Jackson raised the lead to 4-0 with his solo shot off Teheran in the fifth. Charlotte put the game away with a three-run seventh inning, all runs charged to right-hander Buddy Carlyle. Josh Phegley singled home Dan Johnson, while an RBI single by Golson and RBI double by Ray Olmedo made it a 7-0 Knights' advantage.
Knights' right-hander Terry Doyle (W, 1-1) made use of the offense, blanking the G-Braves on five hits over 6.0 innings while striking out seven. Right-hander Jhan Carlos Marinez allowed Sutton's two-run double in the seventh, but Decatur, GA native Anthony Carter came on and shut the door with 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings.
Gallagher led the Knights' attack, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI. Five Charlotte hitters recorded a multiple-hit game including Kuhn (2-for-5, RBI), Johnson (2-for-4, double), Phegley (2-for-5, RBI), Golson (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Jordan Danks (2-for-4). The 17 hits were the most by a G-Braves' opponent this season.
The Gwinnett Braves (13-7) conclude their three-game series with the Charlotte Knights (11-9) on Thursday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. G-Braves' right-hander Eric Junge (2-1, 4.50) will oppose Charlotte southpaw Eric Stults (1-0, 1.13) in the rubber-match between the IL South Division foes. Listen to the game on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play. The game will also be broadcast on television on CSS.
Thursday is "$3 Thursday" which includes $3 food and drink specials all game long. All general admission berm seating is also just $3 on Thursdays.
