Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk picked up its second consecutive win Wednesday night, doubling up Durham 4-2 at Harbor Park.

Durham jumped out to a 2-0 lead off Norfolk starter Dana Eveland in the fourth, as former Tide Kyle Hudson drove home a run with a groundout and Shawn O'Malley beat out an infield hit to give the Bulls an early advantage.

Durham starter Matt Torra (1-2) was sharp early on, as he retired the first 12 batters he faced before running into trouble in the fifth. Joe Mahoney, Luis Exposito and Jamie Hoffmann led off the fifth frame with consecutive singles, and Mahoney scored the Tides' first run on a fielder's choice groundout by Scott Beerer. After an error by Matt Mangini allowed the Tides to knot the score, Steve Tolleson followed with a run-scoring double to give the Tides a 3-2 lead. One batter later Xavier Avery plated Norfolk's fourth run with a sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 4-2.

Norfolk's bullpen held the Bulls off the scoreboard the rest of the way, combining for four shutout innings of relief. Miguel Gonzalez retired all six batters he faced before giving way to Jon Link, who worked a scoreless eighth. Zach Phillips then pitched around two singles in the ninth frame to register his first save of the year.

Gonzalez has now allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 14 in 9.2 innings of relief, with IL batters hitting .034 (1-for-29) against him.

Eveland (2-1) earned the win, as he yielded two runs on six hits in five innings. The 28-year-old left-hander struck out two and walked two, and he's now allowed two earned runs or less in three of his four starts this season.

With the loss, Durham has now lost 10 straight games, its longest losing streak since joining the International League in 1998.

After an off day Thursday, the Tides will welcome the Louisville Bats to Harbor Park on Friday for the start of a four-game set. Steve Johnson (1-0, 2.30) will take the mound for Norfolk against left-hander Jeff Francis (1-2, 4.09), with first pitch slated for 7:15.
