August 30, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #140- HOME GAME #70 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (70-69) vs. BUFFALO BISONS (64-75)
RHP JEURYS FAMILIA (8-9, 4.78) vs. RHP P.J. WALTERS (3-2, 3.71)
ELIMINATED: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin a 2-game homestand and series against Buffalo (Mets) after being eliminated from post-season contention yesterday with Pawtucket's (Red Sox) 9-4 win at Gwinnett (Braves). The Red Wings trail Wild Card-leading Pawtucket by 5.5 games with 5 to play. But even if Rochester wins out and Pawtucket loses each of its 6 remaining games, the International League would not hold a tiebreaker. The PawSox won the season series against the Red Wings 9-7, and therefore own the tiebreaker.
a Following the short 2-game homestand, Rochester will play its last 2 road games at Syracuse (Nationals) and then return home for their final regular-season game Monday against Syracuse.
a The Wings are 12 games into a stretch of playing their final 17 contests against IL North opponents and they are 5-7. Rochester is 30-45 against its division rivals overall. The Wings went 40-24 outside the IL North.
ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins yesterday recalled first baseman Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Rochester. Parmelee departs the Red Wings leading the team with 17 home runs and ranking 2nd with 49 RBI despite playing in just 64 games. He batted .338 with 51 walks and a 1.102 on-base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS) overall with the Wings. In his 3 previous stints with the Twins, Parmelee hit a combined .204 with 5 doubles, 2 homers, and 6 RBI in 40 games.
a To make room for Parmelee on the 25-man roster, the Twins yesterday outrighted right-handed reliever Jeff Gray to Rochester. Gray went 6-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 49 games.
IMPROVEMENT: With 70 wins, the Red Wings have already won 17 more games than last year (53-91) and 21 more than in 2010 (49-95). Rochester needs only one more win in its final 5 games to surpass their 2009 win total of 70. The Wings would need to win out to eclipse their 2008 victory total of 74.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: The Red Wings enter tonight with a 3-game winning streak, which is their longest since a 3-game tear August 14-16. They went 2-8 between the 3-game streaks. Rochester is still just 5-8 since sitting a season-best 4 games above .500 at 65-61 on August 16. That was the first time the Wings had been 4 games over .500 since May 14, 2009, when they were 18-14.
a A win tonight would give the Red Wings their longest winning streak since that season-best 7-game tear July 29-August 5.
CELLAR DWELLERS NO MORE: With a 6-game lead over Buffalo and just 5 games remaining, the Red Wings will not finish last in the IL North Division standings for the first time in 3 years. Rochester can finish no worse than 5th place in the 6-team IL North Division.
a Rochester is looking for its first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70. At 70-69, Rochester needs to go 3-2 the rest of the way to finish above .500.
a Rochester is 11-13 since their season-best 7-game winning streak July 29-August 5. Despite the recent downturn, the Red Wings are still 50-39 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 56-46 beginning May 15.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Red Wings have just 3 games remaining at Frontier Field, where they are 42-35. The 42 wins along Morrie Silver Way are the club's most since going 46-26 in 2008. More than 1,500 prizes will be given out as part of Fan Appreciation Days during the last 2 home games tomorrow and Monday.
RUN AWAY: The Red Wings have scored a league-low 539 runs, but they are only one behind Lehigh Valley (Phillies) with 5 games remaining to try to avoid finishing last in that offensive category. Not only that, Rochester is only 4 runs behind Louisville (Reds).
a The Red Wings have scored 27 runs in their last 3 games, their highest total of any 3-game stretch since scoring 27 June 10-12, 2010.
RED WINGS, FOR THREE!!: A win tonight by P.J. Walters would give Red Wings' starting pitchers 3 straight victories for the first time since August 12-14, 2008, when Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Anthony Swarzak accomplished the feat. Nick Blackburn and Shairon Martis both posted wins over the last 2 days to put the Wings in this spot.
a Tonight marks the 10th opportunity in 2012 for the starters to win their 3rd in a row.
WILKIN DOES A BODY GOOD: Outfielder Wilkin Ramirez is batting .354 (34-for-96) with 6 doubles, 3 home runs, and 20 RBI in 25 games in August. He ranks 4th in the IL in hitting in that time, as well as tied for 3rd in RBI. Ramirez's August average includes a .424 mark (25-for-59) and 17 RBI in his last 16 games.
SLAMA THE DOOR SHUT: Righthander Anthony Slama enters tonight with 99 saves in his professional career, including 35 at the Triple-A level with the Red Wings. He logged 2 saves in the recently-completed 5-game series at Buffalo.
CUP RUNNETH OVER: The Red Wings on Sunday were eliminated from the chase for the historic and prestigious Thruway Series Cup presented by Hillside Family of Agencies, the 3-team race for the best record in western New York among Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. Here are the current standings with 5 games to go for the Red Wings:
Rank Team Record Winning %
1. 0 17-13 .567
2. A0 16-13 .552
3. 10-17 .370
