Charlie Leesman Strikes Out Eleven in Loss
August 30, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
Starting pitchers Charlie Leesman and John Lannan struck out 11 and 10 batters respectively, but it was Lannan's Syracuse Chiefs who got the 2-0 win over the Charlotte Knights Thursday night at Knights Stadium. The win gave the Chiefs a 3-1 series win and a 5-3 season series win. Lannan earned the complete-game shutout.
Syracuse did their damage in the visitors' third inning. Jesus Valdez walked and scored on Jarrett Hoffpauir's base hit, and Brett Carroll came home on a Corey Brown sacrifice fly to put the Chiefs up 2-0. That was all the scoring on the night and it turned out to be all Syracuse would need.
Charlie Leesman (12-10, 2.47) struck out two in a row with a runner on third to get out of the Syracuse first inning unscathed. Leesman struck out two of three in the fourth and he struck out the side in the fifth to push his total to nine for the game. His final tally was a career-high eleven strikeouts in seven innings of work. He only allowed four hits and two runs. The eleven strikeouts was also a season-high for a Knights pitcher.
Dan Johnson was 3-for-4 at the plate for Charlotte.
The Knights (80-60) will head to Durham for games Friday and Saturday. Scott Carroll (1-3, 4.43) is scheduled to take the mound Friday for Charlotte against Cesar Ramos (5-5, 3.77) for Durham.
The Knights return home for the final two regular season games Sunday (First Pitch 7:15pm) and Monday (First Pitch 2:15pm) against the Bulls. The Labor Day Weekend games include fireworks after the game Sunday and a US Army Enlistment Ceremony Monday as part of the Knights Military Appreciation Series. Tickets to see the Charlotte Knights are available at the Knights Ticket Office located at Knights Stadium, online at www.charlotteknights.com, or by phone at 704-357-8071 (North Carolina) or (803) 548-8050 (South Carolina).
