Knights Drop Game 2 of Doubleheaader 7-5

The Syracuse Chiefs rallied for seven late runs and defeated the Charlotte Knights 7-5 Wednesday night in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Knights Stadium.

The Knights jumped on the Chiefs quickly when former Knight Alejandro De Aza, down on a rehab assignment from the Chicago White Sox, singled and scored on a Conor Jackson fielder's choice to start the scoring. Hector Gimenez later drove Jackson home with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 2-0.

In the fourth inning, Charlotte (80-59) added two more to their total. Jared Mitchell walked and later scored on a wild pitch with two outs. One batter later, De Aza doubled down the right-field line to bring in Tommy Manzella and push the Knights' advantage to 4-0.

Syracuse cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth with two runs on three hits. Corey Brown tripled to the deepest part of the ballpark to dead center with two outs to score Jarrett Hoffpauir from first base. Brown then came home on a Mark Teahen base hit.

In the following inning, the Chiefs took the lead with four runs on four more hits and three walks. Jesus Valdez doubled home Zach Walters and came around himself on Eury Perez' base hit. Teahen got his second hit and drove in two more runs to put Syracuse up 6-4.

Jesus Valdez homered off of Anthony Carter in the seventh to put the Chiefs up 7-4.

The Knights attempted a comeback when Dan Johnson hit his 28th home run of the season in the seventh inning to bring the Knights to within two runs, 7-5. He was 3-for-4 in the game. De Aza was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored for Charlotte.

The series finale is set for Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. when Charlotte will try to split the series and the season series. Charlie Leesman (12-9, 2.46) will toe the rubber for the Knights against John Lannan (8-11, 4.58) in a matchup of left-handers.
