Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Allentown, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (82-57) used the long ball and a stellar effort from starting pitcher John Maine (WP, 8-5) who won his third consecutive start with 7.0 innings of shutout pitching as the Yankees picked up a 5-0 win over the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs on Thursday night clinching the International League North Division title for the fifth time in six seasons under Manager Dave Miley.

Kevin Russo set the tone in the bottom of the first inning with a triple off the wall in left center field off Iron Pigs starter Mario Hollands (LP, 0-2). One batter later, Eduardo Nunez hit his second homer of the season and the first of four on the night for the Yankees giving SWB a 2-0 lead.

Cole Garner slugged the Yankees second homer of the night and his sixth of the season leading off the bottom of the third with, a solo shot deep to the law section just to the left of the batters eye in center field giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

The Yankees went back-to-back leading off the sixth inning with solo home runs from Ronnier Mustelier and Austin Romine. Mustelier's 10th of the season a shot to the lawn section in deep left center field. Romine followed up the leadoff homer with his third of the season a low liner over the wall in the left field corner. The back-to-back homers in Thursday were the second pair the Yankees hit on the season with Steve Pearce and Jack Cust the first duo to turn the trick on May 29th against Toledo at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York.

Maine held the Iron Pigs at bay all night allowing just three hits over the 7.0 innings the right hander worked. Andres Blanco's double to right center in the third inning was the only Lehigh Valley hit that got out of the infield against Maine, who allowed a single to Kyle Hudson to lead off the game in the top of the first inning and Blanco who had a swinging bunt on third base side of the infield in the fifth.

Cory Wade came on for the Yankees in the eighth inning and retired all three batters he faced before turning the ball over to Ryota Igarashi (SV, 11) who pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning including striking out Jason Pridie to end the game.

The Yankees open up the final four game series of 2012 on Saturday night at Mc Coy Stadium against the Pawtucket Red Sox. Right hander Ramon Ortiz (12-6, 3.44 ERA) will get the start in the opening game of the series for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with left hander Chris Hernandez (1-3, 3.44).
