5. Indianapolis (Pirates) 12-9

a The Red Wings split yesterday's doubleheader at Durham, winning the first game 5-1 before losing the 2nd game 4-3. The Wings tonight look to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time since dropping 3 games in a row to close out June.

a The Wings are 4-3 in their last 7 games, but have still won 8 of 11 since the All-Star Break.

a Rochester needs a victory tonight to gain a split of the 4-game series at Durham and avoid their first series loss since dropping 3 of 4 at Lehigh Valley (Phillies) June 26-29.

HEADS ABOVE WATER: The Red Wings tonight enter play at or above the .500 mark for the 5th day in a row since pulling to 49-49 Wednesday at Norfolk. Tonight marks a 2-game swing as the Red Wings will return home tomorrow a winning team (one game above .500) or a losing team (one game below .500).

a Since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28, the Red Wings are 31-21.

a Going back further, Rochester is 37-28 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 42-35 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.

SERIES BUSINESS: By losing 5 of their first 7 games against Durham, the Red Wings have lost their 2nd season series in 5 tries. The Red Wings lost 5 of 8 against Gwinnett (Braves) for their other season series loss. Rochester's 3 series wins came against Norfolk (6-2), Louisville (6-2), and Charlotte (5-3). The Wings had only one season series victory in all of 2011, going 5-3 against Louisville. They had none in 2010.

FOUR!!: The Red Wings scored 4 or more runs in a season-high 10 straight games until plating only 3 in the 2nd game of yesterday's doubleheader at Durham. The 10-game run was the club's longest such streak since May 28-June 6, 1995, when they scored 4 or more runs in 10 consecutive games as well.

a The Red Wings have scored 93 runs in 20 games in July, an average of 4.7 runs per game for their highest average of any calendar month this season. A breakdown of months:

Month Runs Games Runs/Game

April 71 23 3.1

May 103 30 3.4

June 109 29 3.8

July 93 20 4.7

a The Red Wings still rank last in the IL with 376 runs scored, 30 behind the next closest team Lehigh Valley, which has 406.

YOU HEAR ABOUT TSUYOSHI?: Tsuyoshi Nishioka has hit safely in a season-high 8 straight games, going 13-for-31 (.419) to raise his average to a season-best .253. The switch-hitter has also hit safely in 15 of his last 16 contests, batting .344 (21-for-61). Nishioka is batting .458 (11-for-24) in 6 games thus far on the roadtrip. He batted leadoff in both games of yesterday's doubleheader, his first games in the leadoff slot since the final game before the All-Star Break.

WHAT COULD BE...: Liam Hendriks enters tonight's start with 7 wins, which match Andrew Baldwin's and Eric Hacker's team high from last season. A victory tonight would give Hendriks the most wins in one season by a Red Wings' pitcher since 2008, when Philip Humber and Francisco Liriano both had 10.

a Hendriks is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA (3 ER/21.0 IP) in 3 starts since being optioned from Minnesota July 3.

WHAT ALSO COULD BE...: The Red Wings need just one win in their final 9 games of July to guarantee their 2nd straight winning calendar month. Rochester went 15-14 in June for their first winning month since going 17-15 in August 2009. The Wings haven't posted back-to-back winning months since June and July 2007, when they went 16-15 and 18-13, respectively.

THIS DATE IN TWINS HISTORY: In 2006, Minnesota pitchers strike out 17 Cleveland hitters in a 3-1 win at Jacobs Field...the 17 strikeouts are an Indians' franchise record for a 9-inning game...Francisco Liriano fans 10 in 5.0 innings.
