International League Names Players of the Week
July 23, 2012 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Charlotte designated hitter Dallas McPherson and Rochester pitcher Jeff Manship have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 16-22. McPherson becomes the third member of the Knights to win an IL weekly award this season, following pitchers Charles Shirek (April 16-22) and Terry Doyle (May 28-June 3). Manship is the second Red Wings pitcher to be so honored this season, following Liam Hendriks (June 4-10).
DALLAS MCPHERSON, Charlotte Knights IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Knights DH Dallas McPherson led the International League with four home runs and 13 RBI last week and finished 2nd with nine runs scored and 13 hits. McPherson scored at least once in six games last week, he had multiple hits in five games, and he homered in four of them. On Wednesday McPherson had a season-high four RBI, which he matched three days later on Saturday. Behind the hot hitting of McPherson, the Knights went 5-2 this week and extended their lead in the IL South Division to 7.0 games.
Today is Dallas McPherson's 32nd birthday. He has played professionally since 2001 and is a veteran of 139 games in the Major Leagues with the Angels, Marlins, and White Sox. McPherson is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina.
JEFF MANSHIP, Rochester Red Wings IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-handed hurler Jeff Manship had the lowest ERA of any two-game winner in the International League last week. He turned in a pair of strong 6.0-inning outings on the road and lowered his Triple-A ERA on the season to 2.29. Manship, who began the season in the Rochester bullpen, defeated Norfolk on Tuesday, allowing eight hits and two runs but striking out a season-high seven batters in a 6-2 Red Wings victory. He won again on Sunday, holding Durham to just three hits and a run as Rochester rolled to a 5-1 triumph. Manship, who spent a month with the Twins prior to being optioned to the Red Wings in late June, is now 6-1 on the season with Rochester and 4-1 as a starter.
27-year-old Jeff Manship is in his seventh season as a professional pitcher, having all come as a member of the Twins organization. He has appeared for Rochester in every season since 2009. Manship is a native of San Antonio, Texas.
