ROCHESTER RED WINGS GAME NOTES

FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD

GAME #27 - ROAD GAME #15 - 7:05 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (10-16) at EMPIRE STATE YANKEES (14-11)

LHP SCOTT DIAMOND (4-1, 2.84) vs. RHP RAMON ORTIZ (0-2, 5.09)

RIDING ON A PONY: The Rochester Red Wings tonight close out their 7-game roadtrip with the finale of a 4-game series with the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. The Wings were swept in a rain-shortened 3-game set at Buffalo (Mets) and have dropped 2 of the first 3 games of this series against the Yankees. Rochester tomorrow "returns home" for a doubleheader vs. Buffalo. After an offday Sunday, it's back on the road for an 8-game roadtrip that includes stops at Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Syracuse (Nationals).

ANDY'S DANDY: The Red Wings yesterday announced that the Empire State Yankees game vs. Pawtucket in Batavia on Sunday has been moved to Frontier Field in Rochester. Game time is 2:05 p.m. The Red Wings game vs. Buffalo scheduled for Sunday will now be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 5:05 p.m. at Frontier Field. Saturday's doubleheader will feature two 7-innning games. The move was made to accommodate lefthander Andy Pettitte's rehabilitation start for the New York Yankees.

BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees use the downtown ballpark as a temporary home while PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes a season-long renovation. Tonight at the ballpark:

aHosted organization in suite: Providing Animal Welfare Services

aSpikes and Mittsy appearance: State Road Elementary (Webster)

aRaffle items: Carlton Fisk autographed pitching rubber, Luis Tiant autographed photo, Tsuyoshi Nishioka autographed baseball, Manny Banuelos autographed baseball

TABLES TURNED: The Red Wings yesterday snapped their 8-game losing streak with a 4-3 win against Empire State. The win also snapped a 4-game losing streak against the Yankees. Rochester's victory also snapped the Yankees' 5-game winning streak.

aRochester's 8-game skid was their longest losing streak since a franchise-worst 12-game losing streak August 23-September 3, 2010. The 12-game stretch has actually happened on 3 occasions in the history of professional baseball in Rochester, including July 24-August 5, 2002 and sometime in 1920, when the Hustlers lost 12 straight.

STILL TRYING TO DIG OUT: At 10-16, the Red Wings are off to their worst 26-game start since the 2001 club went 9-17. Rochester that year lost their 27th game, a 3-2 setback at Indianapolis (Brewers) to fall to 9-18.

ROSTER INFO: The Red Wings thus far have employed the services of 30 players, including 16 position players and 14 pitchers. Luke French last night became the 30th player, the 14th pitcher, and the 7th starting pitcher used by the team when he took the mound against Empire State. Only 2 Red Wings have been recalled to the Twins one month into the season: Drew Butera and Ben Revere, who has since returned to Rochester. One year ago today, the Twins had already recalled 10 players.

aThe Minnesota Twins today announced that infielder Sean Burroughs has cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester.

HORSING AROUND: The Red Wings tomorrow play a doubleheader against Buffalo on Kentucky Derby Saturday. The Wings lost 6-3 vs. Gwinnett (Braves) on Derby Saturday last year as Animal Kingdom ran for the roses. Rochester last won on a Kentucky Derby Saturday in 2010, a 1-0 triumph vs. Durham (Rays) as Super Saver won at Churchill Downs. The Wings are 6-8 on days of the Kentucky Derby beginning in 2000.

aSome notable horses that recently raced in the Kentucky Derby include Mine That Bird, the 2009 winner; High Fly, which finished 10th in the 2005 Derby; and Birdstone, which finished 8th in the 2004 Derby.

LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 25 games. In the 5 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 4-1. They are 6-15 in their other 21 games.

aThe Red Wings have scored an International League-low 78 runs, 16 fewer than the next closest team: Norfolk (Orioles) with 94. The league leader is Toledo (Tigers), which has plated 145 runs.

COMPETITIVE BASEBALL: Twenty two of the Red Wings' 26 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. The Wings last night improved to 4-5 in one-run games after losing 4 straight one-run affairs. Three of Rochester's last 5 games have been decided by a single run, including 2 in a row.

NOTHING GREAT ABOUT EIGHT: The Red Wings have been outscored 27-7 in the 8th inning. In the last 8 games alone, Rochester has given up 15 runs in the 8th, 12 of which have come via 5 home runs. Red Wings pitchers have given up 6 homers in the 8th inning overall.

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 1990, the Red Sox trade reliever Lee Smith to the Cardinals for outfielder Tom Brunansky. The Red Wings hitting coach went on to hit .267 with 24 doubles, 15 homers, and 71 RBI in 129 games with Boston. Brunansky made a diving catch in right field on an Ozzie Guillen line drive for the final out of the regular season to secure the Red Sox's American League East Division title.
