Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Rochester, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (14-12) starter Ramon Ortiz was trying for his first win in pinstripes and gave the Yankees six quality innings allowing only one run but the offense went quiet for a second straight night as the Rochester Red Wings (11-16) picked up a 3-0 shutout win in the final game of the four game series at Frontier Field.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had the first good scoring chance of the night loading the bases against Rochester starter Scott Diamond in the bottom of the third. The Yankees put the first two runners on in the inning on a lead off single from Ray Kruml and a walk to Kevin Russo. Doug Bernier moved the runners to third and second respectively with a sacrifice bunt and SWB appeared to be in business with one down. The Wings then opted to intentionally walk Steve Pearce to load the bases. Diamond got Jack Cust to pop out to shallow left and Brandon Laird to bounce into an inning ending fielder's choice.

The Red Wings picked up the first runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a pair of doubles off Yankees starter Ortiz. Rene Tosoni led off the inning with a gap double to right center field and the inning for Rochester was off to a promising start. Ortiz toughened up striking out the next two batters he faced as both Aaron Bates and Joe Benson struck out swinging. Matt Rizzotti double to the right center field alley scoring Tosoni and the Red Wings led 1-0.

The third would be the last inning for Diamond who was taken out amidst rumors that the left hander was headed to the big leagues to join the Minnesota Twins in Seattle. Ortiz pitched through the sixth inning for the Yankees allowing five hits and one run with two walks, six strikeouts, a hit batsman and a wild pitch. Despite pitching well the right hander suffered his third loss of the season.

After Diamond's departure, Rochester got the game to the bottom of the ninth using a combination of four pitchers. Esmerling Vazquez (WP, 1-0) tossed 3.0 innings allowing one hit and striking out three. Left hander Tyler Robertson pitched two thirds on an inning allowing one walk before giving way to Casey Fien. Fien struggled walking three hitters in 1.1 innings but did not allow a run keeping the score 1-0 heading to the top of the ninth.

The Red Wings scored two big insurance runs scoring twice in the ninth inning off Chase Whitley. A double from Rizzotti and a bunt single led off the inning and marked the end of the night for Whitley. Darin Mastroianni singled to center scoring Matt Carson who came on as a pinch runner for Rizzotti and the lead was 2-0. Rochester added a run on a sacrifice fly from Ben Revere to make it a 3-0 game.

The Yankees loaded the bases for a third time on the game in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not score and dropped their second straight game as Anthony Slamma (SV, 6) picked up the save.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens up a quick two game series with Pawtucket on Saturday night at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, New York with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Nelson Figueroa (1-0, 1.17 ERA) gets the start for the Yankees while the Paw Sox will send right hander Brandon Duckworth (3-0, 3.71 ERA) to the hill.
