Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-0 loss to the Buffalo Bisons on Friday night. The Bisons exploded for five runs in the second inning, with right-hander Jeremy Hefner doing the rest in a seven-inning shutout performance.

After a scoreless first inning, Buffalo (17-11) blasted off against Chiefs starter Tanner Roark in the second. The first four batters of the inning singled, with Josh Satin and Matt Tuiasosopo starting off the rally. Fred Lewis' single to left field scored Satin, with Lucas May's single to left plating Tuiasosopo. After a fly out by Omar Quintanilla, Hefner hit a potential inning-ending double-play ground ball to shortstop, but Josh Johnson couldn't cleanly field it. Lewis scored to give Buffalo a 3-0 lead. Bobby Scales then struck out, but Dustin Martin followed with a two-run double to left-center field to cap the inning.

The Bisons then slammed solo home runs in each of the next three innings to break the game open. Tuiasosopo had two of them, with a blast to deep left field in the third inning giving Buffalo a 6-0 lead. He added a second long ball in the fifth inning.

In between, Quintanilla launched a fourth-inning pitch from Roark over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season. That shot came in the fourth inning.

Roark had an odd night in four total innings of work. He allowed seven hits and seven runs (five earned) despite striking out a season-high eight and walking just one.

Meanwhile, Syracuse (10-18) was never able to figure out Hefner throughout the starter's seven innings of work. The Chiefs managed just two hits against the right-hander - a single from Corey Brown to start the game and a seventh-inning double from Carlos Rivero. Relief pitcher D.J. Carrasco closed out the game for Buffalo, giving the Bisons their third straight win of the series.

The Chiefs will head to Lehigh Valley for a two-game series starting on Saturday night at 6:35. Right-hander Yunesky Maya is scheduled to pitch against IronPigs right-hander Tyler Cloyd.
