Rochester Red Wings News Release

FRIDAY, MAY 25, 2012 w COOLRAY FIELD

GAME #47 - ROAD GAME #25 - 7:05 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (20-26) at GWINNETT BRAVES (27-20)

LHP MATT MALONEY (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP ERIC JUNGE (3-4, 3.64)

COOLRAY SUNSHINE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series at Gwinnett (Braves), continuing their 8-game season series with the International League South Division leader and their 8-game roadtrip that also includes a 4-game set at Charlotte (White Sox). The Red Wings return to Frontier Field June 1 for an 8-game homestand with Columbus (Indians) and Norfolk (Orioles).

a The Red Wings in 2011 went just 11-21 against IL South Division teams. They had a losing record against each of the clubs except for Gwinnett, going 4-4 in the 8-game season series. Rochester went 2-6 against Charlotte in 2011, including being swept in a rain-shortened 3-game series at Knights Stadium.

CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game begins today. The game, featuring the International League and the Pacific Coast League, will be played at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field on July 11. Fans can vote simply by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com.

a Leading Red Wings candidates include righthander Anthony Slama, owner of 8 saves, a 0.44 ERA, and a 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and outfielder Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .293 average, 44 hits, 15 extra-base hits, 12 doubles, 12 RBI, 63 total bases, and 21 runs scored.

WINNING WAYS: The Red Wings have won 2 of their last 3, 4 of their last 6, and 6 of their last 9. They also are 11-10 in their last 21 games and 11-12 in May. At 20-26 overall, Rochester is 2 games better than last year and 3 games better than the 2010 club at this same point in the season. The Red Wings are off to their best start since the 2009 team went 23-23 in their first 46 games.

a At 11-12 in May, the Wings are within reach of their first winning calendar month since August 2009, when they went 17-15. Rochester would need to go 5-2 the rest of the way this month to accomplish the feat.

a The Red Wings have alternated wins and losses the last 4 games. They alternated wins and losses only one other time: May 7-8 at Pawtucket.

ROAD TEST: Since sweeping a 2-game series at Syracuse (Nationals) to open the season, the Red Wings have won just 2 games away from Frontier Field in 14 tries. Both victories in the last 14 road games have come with Liam Hendriks as the starting pitcher.

a Rochester went an IL-worst 21-51 on the road last year, including one game as the "road" team against Charlotte at Frontier Field (make-up of an earlier rainout at Knights Stadium).

START ME UP: Lefthander Matt Maloney tonight becomes the 10th different starting pitcher used by the Red Wings. Only Norfolk (12), Indianapolis (11), and Toledo (11) have used more in the IL. But Charlotte, Columbus, and Durham have also used 10. Lehigh Valley has used a league-low 6 starting pitchers. Last year's Red Wings club used 18.

a Liam Hendriks yesterday improved to 3-0 with the Red Wings, joining Scott Diamond as the only starting pitchers on the club to start at least 3-0. Diamond actually won his first 4 starts.

a With Hendriks's win yesterday at Gwinnett, the Red Wings starting rotation yesterday reached the .500 mark. They are now 14-14 with a 3.60 ERA (97 ER/242.2 IP) on the season.

GOT THAT OUT OF OUR SYSTEM: In 11 games since allowing a season-high 11 runs May 12 at Syracuse (Nationals), the Red Wings have given up just 33 runs for an average of 3.0 per game. In fact, Rochester has given up 4 runs or less in 9 straight games and in 10 of those 11 contests. The lone exception in that time was a 6-4 loss at Syracuse May 14.

a Red Wings' pitchers have issued just 7 walks in their last 5 games. They have allowed 145 walks overall, the 6th-lowest total in the IL.

WHAT A RELIEF!: The Red Wings bullpen has tossed 15.1 consecutive scoreless innings in its last 5-plus games, a stretch that began with a scoreless 9th inning from Tyler Robertson May 18 vs. Louisville. Wings' relievers have worked 14.1 straight scoreless innings against Gwinnett.

a The bullpen has a 1.32 ERA (5 ER/34.0 IP) in its last 11 games and a 3.40 ERA (57 ER/151.0 IP) in 45 games overall.

GOING FOR A RUN: The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 144 runs, 19 behind the next closest team of Lehigh Valley (Phillies) with 163. Rochester has scored more than 5 runs in a game just 4 times, including twice vs. Gwinnett in the recently completed series: 6 on Saturday and 11 on Monday. The other 2 occasions came Opening Day at Syracuse and May 10 at Pawtucket.

CUP O' JOE: Rochester 's Mr. Baseball, Joe Altobelli, tomorrow celebrates his 80th birthday. The Detroit native played for the Red Wings for 4 seasons from 1963-66, managed the club for 6 seasons from 1971-76, and won 2 Governors' Cup titles in 1971 and 1974. He also spent time as the club's general manager (1991-93) and as a radio broadcaster (1998-2008). Altobelli, who would go on to win a World Series title as manager of the Baltimore Orioles in 1983, was part of the inaugural class of the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1989. The Wings will celebrate his birthday at the June 2 game vs. Columbus at Frontier Field.

BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees share the downtown ballpark with the Red Wings. While there is no game today in Rochester, here are the details of Spikes' appearance and the month-long raffle:

a Spikes appearance: Bill Gray's restaurant (Henrietta)

a The BMIR raffle has raised $7,217 thus far. There are 4 raffles to go in the month, and all money will go to the 26 not-for-profit organizations being hosted in a complimentary suite during BMIR.
