Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Joey Terdoslavich atoned for a three-error night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, leading the Gwinnett Braves to a come-from-behind 13-8 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night at Coolray Field. The G-Braves trailed 5-0 after the top of the first inning, but Stefan Gartrell homered and drove in three and Ernesto Mejia homered and drove in four to help overcome the deficit.
Terdoslavich snapped an 8-8 tie against right-hander Lester Oliveros, lifting his fourth home run of the season - first since April 28 at Toledo - to right field in the seventh. Gartrell, who had reached on a one-out single, also scored on the blast. The G-Braves added three more runs in the eighth thanks in part to a two-run single by Mejia, putting a back-and-forth game finally out of reach.
The Red Wings had held 5-0 and 7-3 leads as G-Braves starter Eric Junge exited with seven runs, five earned in just 1.2 innings. After the first error by Terdoslavich at third scored Tsuyoshi Nishioka for the game's first run, Sean Burroughs followed with a three-run double and took third on a missed catch error by Terdoslavich. Burroughs later scored on a double by Clete Thomas. An inning later, it was Danny Valencia and Burroughs recording back-to-back RBI doubles to make it a 7-2 lead.
Gwinnett chipped away at the deficit with runs in each of the first five innings. Gartrell bashed a two-run homer, his team-leading 11th of the season, off Rochester starter Matt Maloney in the third inning to make it a 7-5 game. Mejia added a two-run clout of his own off right-hander Esmerling Vasquez in the fifth, giving the G-Braves their first lead of the night at 8-7. Mejia's eighth home run of the season extended his hitting streak to a team-best 13 straight games.
Left-hander Jose Lugo allowed only one run over 4.0 innings of relief, but that run tied the score at 8-8 in the sixth as Michael Hollimon lifted a sacrifice fly to center scoring Sean Burroughs. Right-handers Buddy Carlyle (W, 3-0) and Cory Gearrin (S, 5) combined on 3.1 scoreless innings to preserve the win.
Oliveros (L, 0-1) yielded two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings for the Red Wings. Maloney lasted just 3.0 innings in the start, allowing five earned runs on six hits including the Gartrell homer. Vasquez gave up three more runs over 2.0 innings, two coming on Mejia's round-tripper. Right-hander Brendan Wise allowed three runs, two earned in 1.0 inning of work.
The Gwinnett offense scored in every inning but the sixth, plating their most runs since a 14-12 win at Norfolk on April 11. Gartrell (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs), Mejia (2-for-5, HR, 4 RBIs), Terdoslavich (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs), Jose Constanza (3-for-5), Felix Pie (2-for-3) and Jose Yepez (2-for-2) all enjoyed multi-hit games for the G-Braves.
Burroughs drove in four of the eight runs for Rochester, going 2-for-5 on the night. Valencia drove in two on 1-for-3 hitting.
The Gwinnett Braves (28-20) take on the Rochester Red Wings (20-27) in game three of the four-game series on Saturday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Todd Redmond (4-3, 2.63) starts for the G-Braves, while left-hander Luke French (0-1, 5.91) starts for the Red Wings. The game will be broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
Saturday night is Casino Night at Coolray Field, with the first 2,000 fans receiving Gwinnett Braves Playing Cards courtesy of Charter.
