Indians Beat out Bats 4-1

Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Right fielder Alex Presley fell just a home run of shy of the cycle as the Indians offense belted three triples and two doubles while three Indianapolis hurlers held Louisville to only one run on five hits to give the Indians a 4-1 win over the Bats in front of a crowd of 9,898 on Friday night at Victory Field.

After collecting 11 singles in a 15-inning marathon victory on Thursday night, the Indians offense began Friday night's contest with five straight extra-base hits.

SS Anderson Hernandez began the extra-base bonanza with a triple to right field with one out in the bottom of the first frame. Presley then plated the game's first score when he followed with a double to right to bring home Hernandez and give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

Louisville would even the score with what turned out to be their only run of the game in the top of the third. The Bats took advantage of three straight bases-on-balls as RHP Pedro Villarreal, CF Joey Gathright and SS Kristopher Negron all drew one out walks before LF Willie Harris lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Villarreal.

The single score would be all the Bats could muster thanks to a resilient effort from Tribe starter Justin Wilson and continued dominance from the Indians bullpen. The outing by Wilson (5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 6 SO) featured moments of excellence and some loss of control as the southpaw struck out six and walked five on his way to earning the win, improving to 4-3 on the season.

Following Wilson, relievers Duke Welker (0.2 IP, 1 SO) and Bryan Morris (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 SO) combined for 3.2 scoreless innings of work, with Welker earning a hold in his Triple-A debut and Morris notching his third save of the season. The efforts from Wilson and Welker continued a monstrous month of May for the Indianapolis bullpen, which has now posted a 7-3 record with eight saves and a 2.04 ERA(20 ER in 88.0 IP) during the month.

While the Tribe pitching staff shut down the Louisville offense after their single score in the third, the Indians offense plated a single score in the fifth and two tallies in the sixth to come away with the victory. 2B Brian Friday began what turned out to be the game-winning rally in the bottom of the fifth when he launched a triple to deep center field before eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by CF Starling Marte.

Presley then helped provide the first insurance score when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit and, after moving to third on a single by 3B Jordy Mercer, came home on a base hit by 1B Jeff Larish. Friday would then finish up the scoring with a base hit later in the frame that plated Mercer to give the contest its final score of 4-1.

Louisville starter Pedro Villarreal (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 2-1 after surrendering all four Tribe runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. Bats relievers Kanekoa Texeira (1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Josh Judy (1.0 IP, 2 SO) provided 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the losing effort.

The Indians (27-20) now head to Louisville for the second part of their home-and-home series, starting on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Pirates RHP Jeff Karstens is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Indians, while the Bats are expected to send former Tribe RHP Sean Gallagher to the mound to oppose him

The game will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 5:45 p.m.

Post-game quotes -- RF Alex Presley

(On playing a quick, nine-inning game after Thursday's 15-inning marathon) "It was a long night last night. I got kind of tired running out to left, so it was good to play nine here tonight."

(On being a home run short of the cycle after three at bats) "Absolutely [thinking about the cycle]. In my last at bat, I hit a changeup off the end [of the bat]. I was just saying to myself, 'If it's a fastball, I'm gonna hit it hard, if I get out on a changeup, whatever.' But, yeah, you're definitely aware."

(On Indians starting pitcher Justin Wilson) "He's tough. He's got really good stuff and he doesn't have to pinpoint all of his pitches to ... get hitters out. He's got a really good fastball and most guys usually can't catch up to it."
