After eight straight road victories, the BEARS finally fell away from home in 2006, losing in a shootout to Springfield Wednesday night at the Mass Mutual Center. The BEARS fall to 10-1-0-2 on the year.

The Falcons would take a 1-0 lead in the first period when Justin Keller walked in past the HERSHEY defense and fired a backhand shot over the shoulder of Frederic Cassivi. The goal by Keller was his fifth of the season, and the Falcons enjoyed a 9-8 shot advantage in the first twenty minutes. It was the first time in four games that HERSHEY had allowed the game's first goal, and the BEARS trailed Springfield 1-0 after one.

HERSHEY would come out with a vengeance in the second period, outshooting the Falcons 20-4. The BEARS would tie the game at one when Matt Hendricks took a Dean Arsene pass off the right wing wall and bury the biscuit past Springfield netminder Karri Ramo. The goal was scored at 9:14 of the second, and it would prove to be the only goal of the period for both teams.

After back-and forth hockey in the third period, the BEARS would finally break through and take a lead when Alexandre Giroux scored at 13:43. The pass came from Eric Fehr on the left wing, and HERSHEY had its first lead of the night. Springfield would find a way to force overtime, however. Defenseman Andy Delmore would blast a shot through Cassivi at 16:05 of the third. After a scoreless overtime, the BEARS would fall in five rounds of a shootout.

Notes: Joey Tenute was a healthy scratch in the game, while Chad Wiseman was HERSHEY'S veteran scratch. Pete Vandermeer played in the game, his first appearance since October 29 in Philadelphia. The BEARS will complete the two-game season series with Springfield on Wednesday, March 21 at GIANT Center. Former BEARS forward Mike Nykoluk was named along with Gil Mayer, Fred "Bun" Cook and Dick Gamble to the American Hockey League Hall of Fame in the Class of 2007. Nykoluk, who also has his number retired in the GIANT Center rafters, is the highest scoring HERSHEY skater in franchise history, with 172 goals, 636 assists for 808 points. NHL Hall-of-Fame defemseman Ray Bourque attended the game. Fehr's assist in the third period extended his point streak to 11 straight games. Matt Hendricks was named the game's number two star.
