Road Warriors Win Game 6, 3-1, Advance to 2nd Round

Kalamazoo, MI: The Road Warriors stuck late in the third period to take game 6 against the Kalamazoo Wings by a final score of 3-1. With the win, the Road Warriors advance to play the Wheeling Nailers in the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs.

Andrew Yogan put Greenville on the board first with his first goal of the playoffs 7:08 into regulation. Kalamazoo goaltender Joel Martin fell behind the net while playing the puck and Josh Nicholls fed Yogan to give the Road Warriors 1-0 lead. Matt Caria tied the game with five minutes left on a one-timer that beat Jason Missiaen glove side. Eric Kattelus and Joe Sova assisted to tie the game at one heading into the second period.

Both team had nine shots a piece in the second period but could not break the tie. Greenville had two power plays with all scoring chanced denied by Martin. With Kalamazoo fighting to force a game seven, the game moved into the third period tied at one.

With their season on the line, Kalamazoo came out firing in the third period. The Wings outshot the Road Warriors 15-6 in the period. Missiaen was up the task and stopped all 15 shots he faced in the final frame. The game remained deadlocked until final minutes of the period. With 1:56 left to play, Emerson Clark scored the eventual game winner to put Greenville up 2-1. Just under a minute later, Michael St. Croix added an empty netter to secure the 3-1 win for the Road Warriors.

Missiaen earned his third win of the playoffs for Greenville, stopping 35 of 36 shots faced. Martin took the loss for Kalamazoo, stopping 18 of 20 shots.

The Road Warriors will now play the Wheeling Nailers in the second round of the playoffs. Games one and two will be in Wheeling on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. The series will shift to Greenville for games three and four next Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. Game five, if necessary, will be on Sunday at 7 p.m. Games six and seven, if necessary, will be back up in Wheeling on Monday, 12 and Wednesday, May 14 at 7 p.m.
