Colorado Eagles News Release
BOISE, Idh. -The Colorado Eagles (2-4) fell in a hard-fought and incredibly long contest, 3-2, to the Idaho Steelheads (4-2) at CenturyLink Arena in Game 6 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. With their win tonight, the Steelheads secured their spot in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Alaska Aces.
The first period saw no score for either team as the two goaltenders stood tall between the pipes with Eagles netminder Marc Cheverie turning aside all 6 of Idaho's shots while Steelheads goalie Josh Robinson shut down all of Colorado's 14 shots.
Two minutes and twenty-nine second into the second frame, Colorado forward Alex Hudson toe-dragged a rebound around Robinson and beat him glove side to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage. With just under 14 minutes left in the second period, Eagles forward Luke Fulghum tipped a shot from defenseman Kevin Young around Robinson to pump the Eagles lead to 2-0.
Just over two minutes into the third stanza Gaelan Patterson stuffed home a loose puck deep in the low slot to put the Steelheads on the board, 2-1. Not even twenty seconds later, Steelheads forward Justin Mercier tied the game with a shot from the right faceoff circle to beat Cheverie, 2-2.
The third period was similar to the first in that there was no tally for either team, and the game headed into overtime tied at 2-2.
The first three overtimes passed with no goals, as each goalie battled to keep the puck out of the back of the net. The Eagles eclipsed the previous team record of 70 shots-on-goal in a playoff game with a total of 85 shots while Idaho threw a total of 66 pucks on Cheverie, who also broke Kyle Jones' record for most saves in a playoff game. Idaho forward David de Kastrozza netted the game winning and series winning goal 17:18 into the fourth overtime with a back door tap-in to finalize the 3-2 victory for the Steelheads, as well as the 4-2 series win.
"It's a disappointing way to go out, but I'm not disappointed in the players, they worked really hard and I am proud of them," said Head Coach Chris Stewart.
Not only did the Colorado Eagles break their all-time shot record, the Eagles and Steelheads also surpassed the longest game in EHCL history, going 17:18 into the fourth overtime.
