Peoria Rivermen News Release

Atlantic City, NJ (February 2, 2005) – Rivermen goaltender Alfie Michaud posted his third shutout in the last seven games, as he guided the Peoria Rivermen to a 2-0 win over the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies before a Wednesday night crowd of 1,587 at Historic Boardwalk Hall.

Michaud stopped 37 total shots, including 13 in both the second and the third sessions. The 28-year-old native of Selkirk, Manitoba shut out the Trenton Titans with 42 stops on January 14 in a 2-0 home win and then stymied the San Diego Gulls by denying 12 shooting attempts on January 28 in a 3-0 home victory. Over the past seven games, Michaud is 6-1-0 with a 1.13 goals against average (GAA) and a .961 save percentage.

The Rivermen, dominated much of the game, scored the only goal they would need at 7:47 of the final period. Rivermen Captain Trevor Baker rubbed out an Atlantic City defenseman in the left wing corner, allowing Randy Rowe to cut off Boardwalk Bullies goaltender Tyler MacKay's clearing attempt around the boards. Rowe, in the bottom of the left face-off circle, attempted to the center the puck, but MacKay, who tried to poke it away, had it roll up his stick and into the net. It was Rowe's 11th tally of the season and proved to be the game winner.

Last night, Rowe was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter in their Top Ten, earning No. 6 honors for a one-handed shot from the slot that he scooped into the upper right corner past Toledo rookie goaltender Logan Koopmans with defenseman P.J. Martin hanging all over him.

Tyler Rennette sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from below the right face-off dot in the Atlantic City end with 32 seconds remaining in the game. It was his 10th marker of the year.

Peoria (19-16-4, 42 points) has won two straight games (both on the road) and seven of its last eight games overall. The Rivermen improved to 8-10-2 away from Carver Arena and have improved their record against the Boardwalk Bullies (4-1) and Trenton (3-0) to a collective 7-1-0 on the season. Atlantic City (22-13-6, 50 points) was handed just its fourth regulation home loss in 19 opportunities (12-4-3). The Boardwalk Bullies are 1-4-1 in their last six games and 2-7-2 in their last 11.

The Rivermen were outshot in the first period by Atlantic City 11-6. Michaud came up with a number of big saves, including an early-session stop on a Brian Fahey breakaway.

Peoria was dominated by the Boardwalk Bullies for the second period in a row, getting outshot 13-4 in the middle stanza. This time Michaud's big stop came nearly midway through the period on Brad Nowak, as he was stoned on a breakaway.

The Rivermen killed off their third and final power play of the game at 18:32 of the second period and have now extinguished 36 straight opposition power plays, dating back to January 8 in Las Vegas. Peoria is six more consecutive penalty kills shy of tying the team International Hockey League (IHL)/ECHL record of 42, set in 1991-1992, when Ricky Pion and Mark Bassen helped set the bar.

On Saturday, February 5, the Rivermen continue their four-game, eight-day road trip against the Boardwalk Bullies. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Historic Boardwalk Hall. Peoria will finish its trip against the rival Johnstown Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m.
