Deschatelets/Brown Gulls' Co-Players Of The Month

February 2, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls have announced that Sylvain Deschatelets and Curtis Brown have been named the Kristy's MVP/Stewart Benjamin Jewelry Co-Players of the Month for January. The duo will each be presented the award in a pre-game ceremony before the Feb. 11 match.

Deschatelets led the team last month with 16 points (4g, 12a), 14 of which came during an eight-game point streak. The center also notched the game-winning goal in overtime on Jan. 8 against the Fresno Falcons. The NHL veteran Brown was right on Deschatelets' heels in January, earning 15 points (4g, 11a) while also tallying the game-winner against Long Beach on Jan. 14.

Deschatelets leads San Diego this season with 30 points (10g, 20a) after sitting out the first 10 games while recovering from wrist surgery. Brown, who was signed on Nov. 15, is tied for fifth among San Diego scorers with 23 points (6g, 17a).

Prior to this year, Deschatelets recorded 144 points (47g, 97a) and 297 penalty minutes in two seasons with the Gulls.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound native of Blainville, Quebec began his professional career with the Gulls during the 2000 West Coast Hockey League playoffs. Before returning to San Diego in 2002-03, Deschatelets played for the East Coast Hockey League's New Orleans Brass and United Hockey League's Adirondack IceHawks. He's also played a handful of games in the American Hockey League during his five-year career.

Brown has notched 256 points (111g, 145a) in 554 career NHL games, most of which have come with the Buffalo Sabres. He's also recorded 27 points (14g, 13a) in 69 career playoff games in the NHL. Brown was Buffalo's second round selection (43rd overall) in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft and played with the Sabres until he was traded to the San Jose Sharks last March. Last season, the 6-foot, 190-pounder finished with 25 points (11g, 14a) with Buffalo and San Jose in the regular season and notched two points in 17 playoff games for the Sharks.

The Gulls and Storm meet again Wednesday at the Toledo Sports Arena, with game-time scheduled for 4 p.m. (PST).* San Diego will then play Friday in Wheeling and Saturday in Johnstown before closing the trek Sunday, Feb. 6 back in Wheeling.
