Mississippi RiverKings News Release

Defenseman Jason Lawmaster scored midway through the third period to lead the Mississippi RiverKings to a 2-1 opening night victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Lawmaster, who spent last season in the UHL with the Bloomington PrairieThunder and the Kalamazoo Wings, took the puck off a face off in the left wing circle and skated behind the goal with it. He threw the puck at the goal from the right wing side and it eluded Mudbugs goalie John DeCaro. The puck slithered over the goal line with 10:33 remaining for the winning goal.

Lawmaster had to sweat it out in the end in the penalty box, though. He took a tripping penalty with 1:51 left and the Mudbugs had a couple quality chances to tie the game. However, Larry Sterling made the final of his 21 saves with 35 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.

The RiverKings scored the first goal on the night. Ryan Campbell received credit for a goal on the power play that may have gone off a Mudbugs defenseman or DeCaro himself from the same spot where Lawmaster later scored. That goal 6:08 into the game made it 1-0 Mississippi. Off the ensuing face off, though, the Mudbugs tied the game. Derek Miller skated cleanly through the right circle a fired a perfect shot past Sterling to quickly tie the game.

The RiverKings went one for 10 on the power play. The Mudbugs went scoreless in nine chances.

DeCaro finished the game with 20 saves.

The RiverKings host the Youngstown Steelhounds tomorrow night at 7:05. For ticketing information, call (662) 342-1755 or visit www.riverkings.com.
