Scorps fall on opening night
October 19, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions season started slow with an 8-2 loss to Laredo. The same two teams will square off Saturday inside the Santa Ana Star Center.
Laredo grabbed a quick lead as Alex Penner scored his first professional goal at the 6:48 mark. Less than two minutes later Chris Korchinski found himself alone in front of the net and lifted the puck over goalie Mike Minard.
After the Scorpions fought off a Laredo power play, they got themselves on the board. Konrad Reeder used his speed and stuffed a backhand into the net cutting the deficit to one.
Laredo grabbed the momentum back quickly with James Hiebert's first goal of the game with only 2.8 seconds showing on the first period clock.
The second period mirrored the first with Laredo picking up three goals to the Scorpions one. The period started out well for New Mexico with Tom Kotsopoulos' rebound goal making it a 3-2 game. Unfortunately that would be the last Scorps goal of the night.
The Bucks poured it on as Hiebert scored again, this time shorthanded. With the visitors on a five-on-three power play, they made the most of it. Rane Carnegie scored with the two-man advantage and Brain MacSween picked up his first professional goal on the one-man advantage. Korchinski and MacSween would add third period goals for the final outcome.
The Scorpions and Bucks will play again on Saturday night starting at 7:15 p.m. Fans attending the game will get a free magnet schedule courtesy of Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico. Following the game join the entire Scorpions team at Turtle Mountain Brewery for a party.
