Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Odessa, Texas - Behind two goals and an assist from assistant captain Scott Wray, the Rocky Mountain Rage won their opening game of the 2007-08 season by defeating the Odessa Jackalopes, 3-2. The Rage will try to make it two straight wins on the road to begin the season tomorrow night when they visit the Amarillo Gorillas.
Following a scoreless first period, Odessa drew first blood when Sebastien Thinel snuck the puck past Rage netminder Scott Reid off a wrap-around at 11:33 of the second. Rocky Mountain responded just 30 seconds later, though, after Nick Harloff sent a backhand feed cross-ice to Wray, who banged home the team's first goal of the season. Simon Watson gave the club a lead it would never relinquish at 14:38, and Wray sent home a pretty pass from Brent Cullaton for his second of the night at 16:15. The three goals in a 4:10 span gave the Rage a 3-1 edge. The Jackalopes' Jason Chase notched a power play goal at 17:55 to cut the lead to 3-2 heading to the third.
Rocky Mountain controlled play in the third, out-shooting Odessa, 15-6. But goaltender Mike Gorman prevented the Rage from adding any insurance with some outstanding saves throughout the frame to give his team a chance at the end. The Jackalopes never mounted any serious pressure with Gorman pulled in the waning moments, and the Rage skated away with the victory.
Reid finished the game with 22 saves to secure his first win in a Rocky Mountain sweater as the team moved to 1-0-0 on the season.
The Rage now travel to face the Amarillo Gorillas tomorrow night, which can be heard live on The New ESPN Radio 1600 beginning at 5:55 p.m. MDT with the pre-game show. Fans may also listen to the game online by logging onto www.rockymountainrage.com.
Following tomorrow's clash with the Gorillas, Rocky Mountain then returns home for its second season at Broomfield Event Center on Friday, Oct. 26, against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m.
