
Bucks win opener 8-2

RIO RANCHO, NM- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League opened up the 2007-08 regular season with a convincing 8-2 win over the New Mexico Scorpions Friday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in front of 3,259 fans.
Chris Korchinski scored two goals and picked up two assists, while James Hiebert had two goals, and one assist, while rookie Brent MacSween tallied two power-play goals, and Captain Serge Dube handed out three assists to lead the Bucks (1-0-0). Dustin Traylen had 19 saves in the Bucks net. Laredo outshot New Mexico 24-21.
The Bucks scored three goals in the first period as Alex Penner scored at 6:48 to put the Bucks up 1-0. Korchinksi and Paul Elliott picked up the assists. Laredo made it 2-0 at 8:20 when Korchinski notched his first goal of the night past Scorpions goalie Mike Minard, Penner and Igor Agarunov picked up assists. The Scorpions sliced the Bucks lead in half at 19:06 of the first period when Konrad Reeder scored to make it 2-1 Bucks. But with just two seconds on the clock in the period Hiebert scored, quieting the home crowd. Adam Rivet and Serge Dube picked up the assists. Dube collected three assists on the night.
The Bucks scored three times in the second period to take a 6-2 lead, Hiebert scored short-handed at 12:01 with Jeff Bes picking up the assist to make it 4-2 Laredo. Rane Carnegie scored a power-play goal at 15:23 to give the Bucks a 5-2 lead. Hiebert and Dube had the assists. The Bucks were three-for-nine on the power-play, while the Scorpions were one-for-six. MacSween ended the second period scoring with his first power-play goal of the game at 16:16, making it 6-2 Bucks.
The Bucks scored two goals late in the third to round out the final tally. MacSween picked up his second power-play goal at 14:44, while Korchinski scored at 15:53, making it 8-2 Laredo.
The Bucks and Scorpions will go at it again Saturday night from the Santa Ana Star Center. Game time is set for 8:15 CST.
