Mississippi RiverKings News Release
If the RiverKings can rebound from last week's road trip, then they will finish this week in first place in the Northeast Division. The Youngstown SteelHounds come to town for a pair of games at the DeSoto Civic Center. The games on Friday and Saturday begin at 7:05 p.m. The RiverKings will play their 1,000th regular season game in franchise history on Saturday.
WEEK REVIEW (1-2-1)
Tuesday: Mississippi 3, Wichita 0
The RiverKings scored three times in the first period and coasted to their second win over the Thunder in five days and their fifth straight win overall. Ryan Held scored his eighth goal of the season just 2:40 into the game to give Sebastien Centomo all the offense he needed. At 14:44, Ryan Campbell scored on the power play for his fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0. And Aaron Davis scored with 44 seconds remaining in the period. With his sixth goal of the year, the RiverKings had scored three times in a period for the second straight game against the Thunder, outshooting them in the first period 23-5 and 42-21 for the game. Centomo recorded his second shutout of the season.
Thursday: Oklahoma City 4, Mississippi 3 (SO)
Jason Weitzel scored 1:54 into overtime to give the Blazers a win over the RiverKings. Weitzel's goal marked the first time this season the Blazers beat the RiverKings in four tries. The RiverKings had just tied the game with 19.5 seconds remaining in regulation. While on a power play and Sebastien Centomo on the bench for an extra man, Steve Makway scored his second goal of the year on a well-placed wrist shot from the top of the left circle to the tie the game. The RiverKings trailed 2-1 entering the third period, but Rick Kozak scored on the power play at 1:16 to tie the game. However, Michael Kaye scored at 8:42 of the period on the power play to give the Blazers a 3-2 lead.
Friday: Texas 5, Mississippi 1
The RiverKings had a golden opportunity to take the lead early. Following an altercation, they received a rare triple-minor power play. However, they did not score during those six minutes with the man advantage. The Brahmas, though, got a power play goal from Anders Strome late in the first and another from Justin Kinnunen early in the second to distance themselves from the RiverKings. Blair Manning scored at even strength late in the second to make it 3-0 Brahmas. The RiverKings got a glimmer of hope with 19 seconds remaining in the second period, however. Rick Kozak netted his ninth goal of the season on a scramble in front of the net during a power play. Nevertheless, the RiverKings could not get any closer.
Saturday: Odessa 6, Mississippi 0
Dominic Leveille and John Osborne each scored twice as the Jackalopes routed the RiverKings. The Jackalopes scored twice in each period. The RiverKings did not have the services of forward Rick Kozak or defenseman Cody Blanshan on this night. Kozak received his second attempt to injure penalty of the season at the end of the previous game and ultimately received a two-game suspension from the league. As for Blanshan, he received a cross-checking major at the end of the previous game. However, the league only suspended him for this one game.
STRANGE BUT TRUE FACTS
Rick Kozak has scored 22 goals in 34 career RiverKings games. He set a career-high for penalty minutes in a game with 20 on Friday against the Brahmas.
