December 4, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
PODS (Portable On Demand Storage) and the Mudbugs are teaming up again, joining forces with the US Marine Corps Reserve and their annual Toys For Tots program to help deliver new unwrapped toys to needy area children. PODS will be setting up their convenient portable storage units at three consecutive Mudbugs home games, beginning this evening against the Oklahoma City Blazers and again on Friday, December 14th against the defending CHL champion Colorado Eagles and on Tuesday, December 18th against the Tulsa Oilers. The Mudbugs are asking that all fans in attendance at each game bring along a new unwrapped toy for distribution through Toys For Tots.
The December 14th game will also be highlighted by the Mudbugs annual 'Teddy Bear Toss'. After the first Mudbugs goal of the game, fans are encouraged to throw a stuffed teddy bear onto the ice. The teddy bears will be collected immediately, also benefiting the Toys for Tots program.
Danny Slack, owner/operator of Shreveport PODS, is excited about being involved another positive community cause. "We're very pleased to help support a wonderful cause that will benefit area children during the upcoming holiday season." PODS is a rapidly growing national service that has reinvented the way people can move and store items, providing the ultimate in convenience, security, and flexibility. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill's wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one. He did. The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. That year, Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since 1948. The initial objective that remains the hallmark of the program today is to "bring the joy of Christmas to 's needy children."
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is to collect toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.
