Rayz Get Defenseman Matt Smyth From Steelhounds

The Corpus Christi Rayz have acquired defenseman Matt Smyth from the Youngstown Steelhounds, Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae announced. Smyth is one of the two players to be named later that the Rayz will receive from Youngstown as part of the trade earlier in the season that brought Chris Shaffer to Corpus Christi and sent Jason Baird to Ohio. The move comes shortly after the Rayz acquired the rights to former Odessa Jackalopes forward Jay Latulippe. Smyth is a defensive defenseman who is in his second pro season and first in the CHL. The Rayz return to the ice on Wednesday morning for the 4th Annual Cool School Day Game, presented by the American Bank Center, SMG and the City of Corpus Christi. The Rayz host the Arizona Sundogs at 11:05am and will welcome in more than 3,000 local area students. Tickets for the game are on sale now. Call 361.814.PUCK for more information.

Smyth, 22, comes to the Rayz from the Hounds, however never played a game with Youngstown. He was acquired by Youngstown from the Tulsa Oilers as part of an earlier trade, and then immediately sent to Corpus Christi. He began this season with the Wichita Thunder, playing in only a couple of games, and then appeared in eight with the Oilers. Last season as a rookie, Smyth appeared in 59 games with the Phoenix Roadrunners, where he collected nine assists and 94 PIM. The 6'2", 190 lbs. Smyth is a native Wolseley, Ontario and is expected to help shore up the Rayz blue line.
