RiverKings gain first win of the season

SOUTHAVEN --- Three different players scored their first goals of the season and Larry Sterling stopped 28 of 29 shots in a Memphis RiverKings 3-1 win over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The win was the first of the season for the RiverKings in what was the first of 11 meetings between the clubs this season.

The two teams play again Saturday night at the DCC at 7:05. The first 1,000 fans 12 and under receive Bounz RiverKings retro youth jerseys. The team will also be wearing retro jerseys from the mid ‘90s era of RiverKings hockey. Those jerseys will be auctioned off to the fans after the game.

In Friday night's contest, the RiverKings built a 2-0 advantage on goals by Derek Campbell and Darrell Stoddard at 7:49 and 9:43 of the first period, respectively. Ryan Held scored his first North American pro goal 13:18 into the second . It came on a pinpoint centering feed from the end wall by Tyler McGregor, who was playing in his first game since signing with the RiverKings earlier in the week.

Larry Sterling was solid in net as he complemented a RiverKings defense that did a good job limiting the Mudugs' opportunities. The lone Mudbugs goal was an unassisted, short handed effort by Chris Brassard who tracked down a loose puck at the RiverKings blue line. He slipped the puck past Sterling on the break to end the shut out bid. Still, Sterling's performance earned him the number one star and his first win in a RiverKings jersey. He also improved his career record versus Bossier-Shreveport to 6-4-0.

Ken Carroll took the loss, allowing three goals on 35 shots. Memphis out-shot the Mudbugs 35-29. Both teams were also 0 for 6 on the power play.

The RiverKings are 1-1-1 after the win while the Mudbugs fell to 1-2-1. The result also tied the two teams for second place in the Northeast Division with three points apiece. The both trail Youngstown who, after their win Friday night, is 3-0-0 and have six points in the standings.
