SteelHounds and Esdale Enjoy Rocky Mountain High in 5-4 Overtime Win

October 27, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

The Youngstown SteelHounds won their third straight game of the season and sixth straight overall dating back to the end of the 2005-06 season with a 5-4 victory in OT over the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday night at the Chevrolet Centre. Paul Esdale led the way for Youngstown with two goals and two assists and snagged the game winner in overtime.

The Rage took just 20 seconds to make themselves known to the SteelHounds, as left winger Anders Strome took a pass from Dorian Anneck in front of the goal crease, and backhanded a shot top shelf to give Rocky Mountain a 1-0 lead. It took the SteelHounds three and a half minutes to tie the game as defensemen Paul Esdale poked a shot up over the right leg of Rage netminder David Guerrera to tie the game at one goal apiece. Strome tallied his second goal when he redirected a shot from Kyle Kos just to the right of Hounds goaltender Brad Roberts taking a 2-1 advantage. Chris Shaffer answered for the Hounds with a powerplay goal at the 13:47 mark of the period. Shaffer fired a rebound top shelf on Guerrera to tie the contest at two.

Chris Richards, who notched an assist on the Esdale goal in the first frame, recorded his fifth goal of the season on the powerplay when he banked in a rebound from a Jeff Alcombrack shot into the net, giving the SteelHounds a 3-2 lead. Just when you thought the second period was done, Jeff Christian settled down in front of the net and took a nice feed from Joey Sewell for his third goal of the season. The Hounds led 4-2 after two periods.

The Rage scored the only two goals of the third period tying the game at four goals apiece and sending the contest to overtime. The goals were scored by Nick Warriner and Strome giving him the hat trick.

The extra frame saw the Hounds kill one penalty on a Kelly Sickavish minor only to score on their own powerplay 25 seconds later. Esdale earned the hero honors after he found a spot in between the slot and picked his spot sending a slap shot top shelf over Guerrera for the game winning goal.

The SteelHounds outshot the Rage 39-21 in the contest. Roberts, who stopped 17 of 21 shots in his first professional start got the win while Guerrera took the loss.

The rematch between the two teams is set for tomorrow night, with face-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
