Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Hidalgo, TX - Bill Newson had two power play goals and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees rode four special teams goals to victory Friday night as they beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-2 at the Dodge Arena. Corpus Christi outshot the Bees and had chances, but timely scoring from the Bees kept the Rayz at bay all evening. The Rayz will look for their first win of the season in their second home game on Saturday night when they host the Austin Ice Bats at 7:05pm. Tickets are available for Halloween with Harley Davidson at the American Bank Center. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
The Killer Bees jumped on the Rayz for the first goal of the game. Jamie Lovell beat Brent Zelenewich (27 shots, 22 saves) on a rebound shot from the left circle at 7:27 to make the score 1-0. The Rayz answered with their first power play goal when Justin Quenneville beat Mathieu Blanchard (28 shots, 26 saves) from the bottom of the slot for his first goal of the season. Kevin Watters and Ryan Carter assisted on the goal that tied the game at one. The Bees added two goals late in the frame to take a lead into the locker room. Jason Cirone scored a wrap around goal on the power play at 16:29 to recapture the lead for the Bees and Matt Reynolds scored shorthanded on a blistering slapshot from the left circle at 18:03. The Bees outshot the Rayz 11-9 in the opening frame.
The Rayz opened the second period with a four-minute power play, including two minutes of five on three hockey. The Rayz kept consistent pressure in the Rio Grande Valley zone, however could not beat Blanchard and the Bees killed off all three penalties. The Rayz did break onto the second period scoresheet even strength when Ryan Carter scored his second goal in as many games. Carter broke into the Bees zone on the right wing and beat Blanchard with a low, blocker side shot at 11:39. Jason Baird and Geno Parrish assisted on the goal that brought the Rayz within one. The Bees recaptured their two goal lead before the period ended when Bill Newson capped off an attack set up by Cirone and Dennis Maxwell at 14:44 on the power play. The Rayz outshot the Bees 9-8 in the period.
In the third period, the Bees put the game away with Newson's second power play goal and fourth point of the night. Newson was positioned in the slot when a loose puck bounced to him and he wristed a shot past Zelenewich at 6:16 of the third period.
The Rayz fell to 0-2-0 on the young season, while the Killer Bees improved to 2-1-0. Corpus Christi outshot Rio Grande Valley 28-27, holding their opposition to less than 30 shots for the second time in as many games this season. Zelnewich took the loss in his first game of the year, and Blanchard earned his second straight victory as the rookie improved to 2-0.
The Corpus Christi Rayz will return to the ice on Saturday night at 7:05pm when the Austin Ice Bats make their first trip of the year to the American Bank Center. Join the Rayz for Halloween with Harley Davidson. The Rayz will host a pre-game street carnival beginning at 6:00pm, complete with a costume contest. The Rayz will also wear specialty Harley Davidson, Halloween style jerseys. For more information, please contact the Rayz at (361)814-PUCK.
