Scorpions defeated by Arizona on historic night

October 27, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), brought hockey back to New Mexico Friday night at the opening of the Santa Ana Star Center. Unfortunately the Sundogs took the victory by a score of 3-1.

History was made just 6:40 into the contest when Arizona's Brent Kelley scored the first goal in the Santa Ana Star Center's history. The rest of the first period would be quiet.

Fans were excited as the teams skated out for the second period, but both goalies stood tall not allowing a goal. The lone second period highlight came at 14:59 when Scorpions' rookie Mike Prpich dropped the gloves with Arizona's Adam Campbell. The fans were treated to an old fashioned hockey fight as both sluggers traded punches.

The Scorpions tied it up when Ryan McLeod scored his second goal of the season at 3:24 of the third period. The 6,102 fans at the Santa Ana Star Center erupted and hoped to see more, but it would not happen.

The Sundogs Brent Kelly scored his second goal of the night giving Arizona all the offense they would need. The Sundogs would add a late power play goal by Torrie Wheat for the two goal win.

The Scorpions will have little rest as they travel to Colorado Saturday night. The Eagles will host the Scorpions at 7:05 PM from the Budweiser Events Center.
