Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs improved to 2-1 on the season, beating division rival New Mexico 3-1 in the first-ever game at the brand new Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Brent Kelly scored his first two goals of the season, including the game winner after missing opening weekend action due to immigration delays. Arizona's Chris King backstopped the Sundogs to their second win of the season, stopping 26 of 27 shots faced.
The Sundogs gave the Scorpions their first power play of the game at 3:12 of the first period when Arizona's Dan Laperriere was called for holding. New Mexico failed to take advantage and Arizona would see their first man advantage of the game less than three minutes later. The Scorpions' Bob Kukulka would be called for hooking at 5:57 of the first. The Sundogs, leading the CHL in power play percentage, would need only 31 seconds to capitalize with Brent Kelly tallying his first goal of the season from Cory Stillman and Dan Laperriere. The assist marks Laperriere's fifth on the season.
The Sundogs opened the second period a man down after Michael Vernace was handed a two minute penalty for hooking to close out the first. Arizona's Adam Campbell would give New Mexico a two-man advantage, taking an interference call at just 32 seconds of the middle period. New Mexico would continue their special teams' struggle this season, unable to convert on the power play. The second period would prove to be a scoreless one with neither team able to put a goal past the opposing club's netminder. Arizona's Chris King stopped 10 shots while New Mexico's Walter Bartholomaus blocked 7.
In the third, New Mexico would match Arizona 1-1 at 3:24 of the period on a goal from Ryan McLeod, assisted by Vladimir Hartinger and Lance Herauf. At the 8:38 mark, Arizona would again take the lead as Kelly netted his second goal of the game on an assist from line mate Tab Lardner. New Mexico would take two penalties late in the game and Torrie Wheat would add an empty-net goal to secure the 3-1 win.
Arizona, ranked first in the league in power play percentage, continued their success on special teams finishing 2 for 7 on the man advantage while New Mexico finished 0 for 6.
