RiverKings Fall at Wichita, 2-1

(Wichita, KS) -- The Wichita Thunder made two first-period goals stand up on Friday night, holding on to a 2-1 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings at the Kansas Coliseum.

Troy Ofukany opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first period, and Chad Greene scored the eventual game-winning goal on the power play at 17:01 of the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Matt Pierce banged in his own rebound near the crease for the RiverKings' only goal of the night at 3:34 of the third period, assisted by Dallas Costanzo and Adam Smyth.

Mississippi put a season-high 52 shots on goal on winning goaltender Tim Boron (2-6-1), who made 51 saves. The Thunder answered with 37 shots on losing goaltender Kevin Beech (12-7-0), who made 35 saves.

The RiverKings failed to score on eight power plays, while the Thunder were 1-for-8 with the man advantage.

Mississippi falls to 14-10-0 for the season, while Wichita broke a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) to run its season mark to 7-15-2.

The RiverKings travel to Amarillo for their next game Saturday night, beginning at 7:05 PM. It will be the first time the teams have played each other since a 5-1 Memphis RiverKings win in March of 2005.
