Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-4 Friday night, in front of 6,320 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. With the win the Bucks improve to 17-6-1 (35pts), and have earned points in 13 of their last 15 games. Laredo now trails Odessa by three points in the Southern Conference (38 to 35).
Jeff Bes scored two goals, including the game-winner early in the third period, while Darryl Smith picked up two points to lead the Bucks. Sebastien Centomo stopped 30 of 34 Killer Bee shots for Laredo.
The Bucks (12-3 at home) trailed 5-4 entering the third period, but scored twice in the final frame to take the win.
Adam Rivet tied the game 5-5 just 1:48 into the third period, when he slipped a back hander by Bees goaltender Christian Boucher. The tally was Rivet's fourth of the year.
Bes would give Laredo a 5-4 lead as he scored his second goal of the night with 11:04 left in the game, as he lifted a shot past Boucher from the left circle.
Laredo jumped out in front 4:26 into the first period when Jeff Bes scored his ninth goal of the season. Bes took a pass from Rick Kozak in the high slot, and ripped a snap shot past Christian Boucher. Kozak and Darryl Smith picked up assists. The Bucks are now 12-3 when scoring first this season.
The Bucks increased their lead to 2-0 with 2:15 left in the first period, when Smith picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, then skated past two Rio defenders and slid the puck past Boucher from the right circle. The tally was Smith's 18th of the year.
The Bucks outshot the Bees in the first 20 minutes 10-6.
The Killer Bees (11-10-2) came out and scored four goals in the second period to take a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.
With the Bucks leading 2-0 the Bees scored three straight times in a span of 5:38. Jesse Bennefield scored two straight goals, one on a break away at 3:24, and the other coming on a penalty shot at 4:48 to tie the contest at 2-2. The goals were Bennefield's 11th and 12th of the campaign.
Rio would take a 3-2 lead at the 5:38 mark of the second, when Steven Burns deflected in a shot from Robin Bouchard from the right circle.
Laredo would tie the game as they struck on the power-play with under seven minutes left in the second. Alex Goupil would score his 14th goal of the year, when he rifled a shot past Boucher from the high slot. Jason Dixon picked up his 14th assist on Goupil's strike.
Rio would re-take the lead with just 1:04 left in the period, when Nicolas Dumoulin whipped a turn around shot from the point past Centomo.
The Bucks were outshot in the second period 16-10.
Laredo is now 7-2-1 in one-goal games thus far this season.
On Saturday night the Bucks will wear their annual holiday jersey's when they host Corpus Christi. After the game the jersey's will be auctioned off, with Bucks President/General Manager and Head Coach Terry Ruskowski serving as the auctioneer.
