RiverKings edge Rage 5-4

Ryan Campbell scored his Central Hockey League-leading ninth shorthanded goal of the season as the Mississippi RiverKings hung on to defeat the Rocky Mountain Rage 5-4 tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Campbell's 25th goal of the season broke a 2-2 tie with 1:47 remaining in the first period, propelling the RiverKings (31-20-2) to a strong second period.

Steve Makway scored his 10th of the year on the power play with 5:21 to go in the second, and Jason Lawmaster slipped home his fifth with 3:09 left to put the RiverKings ahead 5-2 going into the third period.

The Rage (33-16-5) made a game of it in the third. Pat Sutton scored his second of the season at 4:25 to make it 5-3. Trevor Weisgerber banked in his 23rd with 6:30 remaining to bring the Rage within one.

Ian Keserich made 26 saves for the RiverKings. Terry Dunbar made 21 saves for the Rage.

The RiverKings got off to a fast start tonight. Aaron Davis scored his 18th goal of the season 5:06 into the contest, with Rane Carnegie following up with his 16th of the year at 6:51. Nevertheless, the Rage quickly tied the game. Brent Cullaton received credit for his 17th goal of the year at 7:28 and Ladislav Kouba netted his seventh at 8:16.

With victories by both the Youngstown SteelHounds and the Texas Brahmas tonight, the RiverKings remain one point behind the Brahmas for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Northern Conference and two points behind the SteelHounds for fourth position. However, the RiverKings and the Brahmas each have one game in hand on the SteelHounds.

The RiverKings begin a four-game road trip on Tuesday by visiting the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show begins on radio at 6:55 p.m. on Y 96.1 FM. Internet listeners can hear the game at www.radiopig.com.
