The Bucks come into tonight's game with a 10 point lead on Arizona and Odessa for the number one seed in the Southern Conference playoffs. Laredo needs a combination of 13 points (either Bucks wins or Sundogs and/or Jackalopes losses) to clinch the conference and gain home-ice in the South.
Laredo is looking to get the bad taste out of their mouth from last night's 4-2 loss to Texas, which snapped the Bucks three-game winning streak. In what can be described as a weird game, Laredo gave up three power-play goals to the Brahmas, and a controversial goal in the first period.
Last night as the teams were heading off the ice to the locker rooms after the first period had ended, referee Paul DePuydt went over to the scorer's box to tell the official scorer that Texas (Jordan Cameron) had scored a goal with 58 seconds left in the period. The officials then brought the two teams back onto the ice and put 58 seconds back on the scoreboard, and forced the teams to play the final 58 seconds of the period again. The media was told that the goal judge did not see the puck cross the line, and there was no word why referee DePuydt did not stop the game as soon as he saw the puck cross the goal line for the Brahmas.
Laredo struggled for the second straight game on the power-play, going one-for-nine, to put them at 1-19 in their last two games with the man advantage.
The Bucks are also struggling at home as of late, going 1-2-1 in their last four home games. Laredo will play game three of their season long five game home stand tonight.
Jeff Bes had two assists last night to push his CHL-leading total to 93 (42-51=93). Bes leads Arizona's Alex Leavitt (29-62=91) by two points for the league lead.
Corpus Christi comes into tonight with a small chance at the fifth seed in the South. The Rayz are six points behind Austin with 11 games remaining.
Corpus Christi's playoff hopes took a hit last night as they suffered a 5-4 overtime loss to Rio Grande Valley. The Rayz allowed two third period goals, and gave up the game-winner just 38 seconds into the extra session. Dennis Maxwell won the game for Rio in overtime.
The Rayz have struggled as of late, going 1-7-2 in their last 10 games, picking up only four points in that span.
If Corpus is going to get the final playoff spot, they will have to start making a run against some stiff competition. Of the Rayz final 11 games, nine of them are against teams who have a better record than they do, including the team they are chasing, Austin (three games against).
The Bucks lead the season series against the Rayz 8-3, including 3-2 at the LEC. In the previous 11 meetings this season between the two squads, no games have gone to overtime or a shootout. Compare that to last season when four of 13 meetings went to either overtime or a shootout.
After tonight the Bucks will conclude their home stand next weekend, when they host Rio Grande Valley on Friday night, and Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday night. Group tickets are available for $10, with individual tickets starting at $12.75. Playoff packages are now available, by calling 718-BUCK (2825).
