New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions continued their pursuit for first place with a 5-2 victory over Arizona Friday night. The win moved the Scorps to within two points of first place.
The first forty minutes was back and forth with Arizona grabbing the early lead. Chris Bartolone found the net on the power play with a slap shot from the point.
New Mexico was given their own power play minutes later. Erik Johnson pounced on a rebound tying the game at one 7:59 into the first period.
The teams came out for the second period and were delayed with ice problems. After the Santa Ana Star Center crew worked diligently to repair the ice, the teams returned form the locker rooms ready for battle.
Just like in the opening frame, Arizona scored first. Karl Sellan shot the puck through traffic past goalie Andrew Martin and into the net.
New Mexico responded again as the league's hottest player Chris Robertson pushed a rebound back home. With the score 2-2 after two periods of play, the question was which team would push harder in the final frame.
The answer became clear 6:52 into the third period when Konrad Reeder tucked the puck into the short side for the eventual game winning goal. New Mexico didn't let off the gas pedal the rest of the way.
Mitch Stephens gave the Scorpions their first two-goal lead when he unleashed the furry on the power play. Johnson added his second goal of the night giving the Scorps their eventual three-goal victory.
Saturday night the Scorps will host the Colorado Eagles at 7:15 p.m. The first 1,500 fans inside Santa Ana Star Center will receive Embry-Riddle University rally towels.
Prior to the game the New Mexico High School Hockey Championships will take place. The games begin at 12:20 and 2:30 p.m. Your Scorpions ticket gets you into all three hockey games on Saturday.
