Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Southaven, Miss. - In the teams' first meeting of the season, the Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Rocky Mountain Rage, 5-4, at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The teams exploded for a combined four goals in a three minute span to begin the game. Mississippi's Aaron Davis and Rane Carnegie scored 1:45 apart to give the RiverKings an early 2-0 edge. But the Rage responded with a pair of goals 48 seconds apart from Brent Cullaton and Ladislav Kouba to square the game with only 8:16 gone in the first. Mississippi jumped back in front at the end of the period with a short-handed goal at 18:13 from Ryan Campbell, who now leads the CHL with nine short-handed markers this season.
The Rage remained within 3-2 for most of the second period until the RiverKings struck on the power play when Steve Makway's wrist shot from the point sailed in at 14:39. Mississippi then scored the eventual game-winner off a three-on-two rush. Jason Lawmaster's effort at 16:51 gave the âKings a 5-2 lead through 40 minutes.
Rocky Mountain used two big breaks in the third period to get back in the hockey game with a chance to tie down the stretch. The first break occurred mid-way through the final frame after Pat Sutton had already scored at 4:25 to make it a two-goal game. Mississippi appeared to have re-established a three-goal margin, but the whistle blew just before Ryan Held's shot off a rebound went in. The waved-off goal kept the Rage within 5-3. At 13:30, Trevor Weisgerber air-mailed a shot well over the RiverKings net, but the puck hit the glass, bounced off the back of goaltender Ian Keserich, and then rolled over the goal line to suddenly draw Rocky Mountain within a single tally.
The Rage then pulled Terry Dunbar for the extra attacker in the final two minutes and generated several good looks at the equalizer before ultimately falling short.
Rocky Mountain has gone winless in seven straight games on the road (0-6-1) to drop to 33-16-5 with 71 points. The Rage now return home where they will play six of their next seven at Broomfield Event Center beginning with a showdown on Tuesday, March 4, against the Arizona Sundogs at 7:05 p.m.
