Austin Ice Bats News Release

(Austin, TX) - Coming off one of their biggest wins of the season, it was a slow start on Saturday for the Ice Bats as they hosted the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at Chaparral Ice Arena. The Bees took advantage of the Bats slow start to jump out to a three goal lead. Austin added two goals in the third, but it was too little, too late as the Bees topped the Bats 3-2.

Only one goal was score in the first period when Mike Tuomi put Rio Grande up 1-0 in the first minute of the game. Robin Big Snake added the assist. That's what the scoreboard read at the end of the opening period.

In the second Rio Grande made it a two goal lead on a Travis Banga goal. Dennis Maxwell added a shorthanded goal, to make the score 3-0, when he picked up the puck on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box. The Ice Bats were still held scoreless as the two teams skated into the second intermission with Rio Grande leading 3-0.

In the third the Ice Bats finally found the scoreboard when RG Flath found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the year. Kurtis Kisio and John Neal tallied the assists. With 58 seconds left Jamie Thompson pulled the Bats within one by scoring his 13th of the season. Jason Tessier and Brendan Cook added the helpers. That was as close as the Bats would get however, and Rio pulled away with a 3-2 win.

The Bats take to the road Sunday for a 3:05 PM puck drop against the Texas Brahmas. The game be heard on 1530 ESPN Austin and espnaustin.com

The Ice Bats are the AA Affiliate for the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the AHL's Houston Aeros (AAA). The team is currently playing its 12th season in Austin. Single game tickets and mini-plans are available by calling 512-927-7825 or visiting icebats.com.
