RiverKings Continue Strong Play Against Eagles

Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Mississippi RiverKings continued to have the Colorado Eagles' number as they won, 4-2, at the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles are 0-4-0 at home (and just 1-6-2 overall) against the RiverKings over the past three seasons in the regular season.

Like Arizona one week ago, Mississippi made the most of their chances (scoring four goals on just 23 shots) while Colorado couldn't convert enough despite throwing 32 shots on net. Former-Eagle Tim Boron made 30 saves on the night, and had help from his goalposts as the Eagles hit iron four different times.

The Eagles out-shot the RiverKings 11-8 on the way to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Ed McGrane got the scoring started at 12:07 by converting on a tic-tac-toe play from the second line as the puck went quickly from the left circle, to the slot, to the right circle for a one-timer inside the left post.

Each team tossed nine shots on net in the second period, and Ryan Held continued his hot streak by tying the game up at 1 with a goal at 13:24. Held picked up his team-leading 24th goal of the season -- and fourth in three games -- by putting home a Ken Davis rebound from the right side of the crease.

Mississippi went on top 50 seconds into the final frame when Kevin Truelson scored on a blast from the point for a 4-on-3 power-play goal. Stephen Margeson then made it 3-1 at 5:25 when his shot from in front of the Eagles' bench snuck through the pads of Andrew Penner.

The Eagles' first line cut the Mississippi lead back down to one under a minute and a half later, when a trailing Riley Nelson put home the rebound off a Kevin Ulanski and Ryan Tobler rush. But Colorado couldn't beat Boron -- who made several strong saves -- to get the tying goal midway through the period when they had an extended 5-on-3 power play.

Bobby Chaumont would score the game's final goal with 1:41 left when he converted from the slot just as his own team's two-man advantage was expiring. The two clubs meet again Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
