Bucks Fall 9-4 As Bes Sets Another Record

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Corpus Christi Ice Rays 9-4 Friday night at the American Bank Center. With the loss the Bucks slip back into fourth place in the Southern Conference with a 24-17-9 (57 points). Laredo is now two points behind Texas.

Chad Woollard picked up a hat trick and Kyle Peto scored twice to lead the Ice Rays while Chad Costello (1-3=4) and Justin Quenneville (0-4=4) had four points apiece.

Jeff Bes became the Bucks all-time leader in games played Friday night passing Serge Dube. Bes, who also is the franchises leader in goals, assists and points, has now played in 384 career games in Laredo

The Ice Rays (22-21-7) came out firing in the first period as they took a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Adam Powell (five-on-three) and Kyle Peto scored power-play goals 38 seconds apart to put Corpus up 2-0 just 2:38 into the contest.

Chris Richards made it 3-0 in favor of Corpus when he scored from the bottom of the right circle off of a pass from Kurtis Dulle at the 7:47 mark.

The Bucks got on the board and made it 3-1 Ice Rays when Curtis Billsten tipped in Eric Giosa's shot right in front of the Ice Rays net 8:18 into the first. The tally was Billsten's seventh of the year.

Corpus increased their lead to 4-1 at the 12:54 mark of the first when Steven Later scored the Ice Rays third power-play goal of the period with a slap shot from the point.

After the Ice Rays fourth goal Pier Pelletier was replaced in net by Kevin Desfosses. Pelletier stopped 10 of 14 shots he faced.

Corpus outshot Laredo 18-12 in the opening period.

The Bucks opened the second period by striking for two goals in 36 seconds to cut the Ice Rays lead to 4-3.

Darryl Smith jammed in a rebound right in front of the crease just 20 seconds into the period to give Laredo a power-play goal. The goal was Smith's team-leading 28th of the campaign.

Just 16 seconds later Neil Trimm cut the Corpus lead to 4-3 when he hammered in a rebound from the bottom of the left circle. Trimm has scored a goal in three straight games and has 10 on the season.

Less than one minute later Chad Woollard put Corpus up 5-3 when he scored his league-leading 32nd of the season off of a rifle slap shot from the left circle.

The Bucks outshot the Ice Rays 14-5 in the second period.

Robin Richards scored a power-play goal to cut the Ice Rays lead to 5-4 just 1:20 into the third period. Richards now has seven goals on the season.

The Ice Rays scored four straight goals after that to make it 9-4. Woollard (1:49), Peto (14:28), Woollard (15:34) and Costello (19:09) scored to cap the Ice Rays win.

The nine goals given up by the Bucks matches the most this season. Laredo gave up nine goals on November 4th in Arizona.

Desfosses stopped 23 of 28 shots in net while Kevin Beech set aside 32 of 36.

Laredo was outshot in the game 42-36.

Adam Rivet tied Steve Weidlich Friday for fourth place all-time in Bucks history with 301 games played. Rivet played in his 300th career game Thursday night.

The Bucks continue their three-game road trip Saturday afternoon in Rio Grande Valley with a special 1:05pm start time.
