Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League rallied with three goals in the third period to claim a 4-2 victory over the Dayton Gems on Saturday, December 11th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Mississippi forward Louis Dumont scored two goals and added an assist to lead the offensive effort.

Dayton took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Jonathan Ornelas just over three minutes into the first period, but the RiverKings answered with Dumont's first goal of the night and seventh of the season mid-way though the period for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission break.

Dayton scored the only goal of the second period when Corey Couturier netted one past RiverKings goaltender Larry Sterling at 10:28 of the middle frame for a 2-1 second intermission lead.

But the RiverKings broke through in the final frame, starting with a tying goal from Matt Summers at 2:05 on the power play. The week's reigning CHL Player of the Week now has eight points in his last five games.

R.G. Flath then deflected in the eventual game-winning goal exactly eight minutes later during a scramble in front of Dayton goalie Jeff Jakaitis at 10:05 for a 3-2 Mississippi lead.

Dumont provided the finishing touch with a shorthanded, empty-net goal at 18:55 for the final score.

Both teams scored once on the power play, with the RiverKings finishing 1-for-4 and Dayton ending 1-for-6 with the man advantage. Mississippi out shot the Gems 35-22. Winning goaltender Sterling (5-3-1) stopped 20 shots on goal, while Jakaitis (8-7-1) halted 31 Mississippi shots.

The 4,026 in attendance marked the second largest home crowd of the season for the RiverKings, surpassed only by the 5,327 paid for the home opener against Bossier-Shreveport in October.

The fans provided over 500 stuffed teddy bears and other stuffed animals for the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys For Tots program.

With the win, the RiverKings, now 11-11-1, remain two points behind third-place Texas in the Berry Conference standings. Dayton fell to 11-9-1 for the year and is 0-2-0 in the midst of a five-game road trip.

Next up for the RiverKings is a Friday night rematch December 17th against the Evansville IceMen at the DeSoto Civic Center, beginning at 7:05 PM.
