Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks faced the Fort Wayne Komets Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks fired up the offense and ended up defeating Fort Wayne, 4-1. Mavericks' goaltender and Central Hockey League (CHL) goals against average leader Rob Nolan stole the show with 26 saves on 27 shots and was named the game's first star. Rookie forward Walker Wintoneak continued his hot streak, recording two assists in the effort.
The Mavericks and Komets both entered Saturday's game having lost their previous two games. The Mavericks dominated the first period, not allowing a single Fort Wayne shot until the 10 minute mark had passed. Nick Sirota got the scoring started for the Mavericks with a goal at the 5:39 mark on an assist from Mike Berry. Fort Wayne responded exactly five minutes later when Leo Thomas found the puck in the slot and put it in the net, tying the score at 1-1. P.C. Drouin and Chris Francis assisted on the goal. After the Komet tally, it was all Mavericks for the rest of the period. Cole Ruwe scored his first goal of the year when he cashed in on a shot from the point on a pass from rookie Walker Wintoneak to put the Mavs up 2-1. Later in the period, Simon Watson took a beautiful pass from Toby Lafrance on a two-on-one odd man rush and buried it to put the Mavs up 3-1. Heading into the first intermission, the Mavs had outshot the Komets 18-7. Fort Wayne amassed nine penalties in the first period.
The second period featured no scoring by either team until the final minute of the period. Rob Nolan and Kevin Reiter went toe to toe, as Nolan stopped eight shots by Fort Wayne and Reiter was almost flawless facing seven shots by Missouri, stopping six. The lone goal of the period came from the stick of Olivier Filion, who buried a loose puck in the crease behind a sprawling Reiter. Wintoneak was given his second assist of the game on the goal. Both teams had chances to score in the period. The Mavericks had three power play opportunities, while Fort Wayne had four man advantages.
The third period was an offensive drought for both teams, as there were no goals scored in the period. Rob Nolan put on a spectacular display of goaltending through the final 20 minutes, stopping all 12 Fort Wayne shots in the final frame. The Mavericks held off the Komets for the victory, 4-1.
The Mavericks finished the night zero-for-13 on the power play, and are now scoreless in their last 26 power play attempts. Fort Wayne didn't have much luck either on the power play, finishing zero-for-nine with a man advantage.
The Mavericks now head west next weekend to take on the Colorado Eagles on Friday and Saturday of next week. The Mavs return home Christmas Week for two games on the 21st and 23rd of December against the Evansville Icemen and Quad City Mallards. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game.
