
Gems struggle late, fall to Mississippi 4-2

Southaven, MS-Looking to snap a two game losing streak, the Gems traveled to Mississippi Friday night in game two of a five game road trip. Dayton attempting to get back into the win column after a 5-2 loss to Bloomington on Friday night, the Gems got on the scoreboard first. Jonathan Ornelas put home a power play goal for the Gems at the 3:21 mark in the first period. Mississippi quickly answered Ornelas' goal with one of their own at the 10:28 mark. At the end of the first, Dayton trailed the RiverKings in shots (10-7) but were all squared on the scoreboard 1-1.
The Gems managed to regain the lead midway through the second period thanks to a goal from Gems forward Corey Couturier at the 10:28 mark. The second period was a defensive battle for both teams. To go along with strong defensive play, Gems goalie Jeff Jakaitis managed to stop all twelve shots the RiverKings attempted in the period. Heading into the third Dayton held a 2-1 lead over Mississippi.
Mississippi came firing out of the locker rooms, adding a quick power play goal from Matt Summers two minutes into the period. Summers' power play goal tied the game at 2-2 until RG Flath put one past Jakaitis to put Mississippi out in front 3-2. Dayton attempted twenty two shots throughout the game and managed only five in the period. Mississippi added a late empty net goal from Louis Dumont to put the game out of reach 4-2.
The Gems next travel to Bloomington next Friday December, 17th, to face off against the PrairieThunder. Game time scheduled for 7:05 p.m., the Gems will try to snap a three game losing streak and get back into the win column for the first time on this road trip. Through 21 games this season the Gems currently sit with an 11-9-1 record.
