Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks will provide American Legion players with an event to showcase their skills this summer.
The RiverHawks' first Independence Day Wooden Bat Showcase Tournament will be held July 6-8 at Road Ranger Stadium. Eight teams, including representatives from Rockford and Freeport, will compete in the eight-team tournament.
"With all the scouts there watching them, it gives them a chance to see how these kids handle a wooden bat, but it also gives the kids experience for when they get to the level where they have to use wooden bats," RiverHawks general manager Josh Olerud said.
Although the tournament will primarily feature American Legion teams, the tournament is open to teams with players 18 and younger and that abide Legion player-eligibility rules.
The eight teams in the tournament will be split into two pools for round-robin play. The winner of each pool will meet for the championship at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The remaining six teams will play their counterpart in the standings earlier on Sunday.
Pool A includes Hard Knox Post 1207 of Rockford, coached by former RiverHawks outfielder Tony Piggott; the Notre Dame Dons of Niles; Bloomington Gold Post 550, from Bloomington, Minn.; and the N/X Level All Stars of Brookfield, Wisc. Pool B includes the Freeport Legion; St. Louis Park (Minn.) Post 282; Portage Park Post 183 of Chicago; and the McHenry County Hurricanes, from Cary.
The RiverHawks are the Western Division champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 15th season in 2007. Advertising, season-ticket and suite information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
