LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Windy City ThunderBolts completed a series victory in appropriate circumstances.
A record crowd at Road Ranger Stadium watched the ThunderBolts score twice in the first inning and lead until the game was called in the seventh inning because of severe weather. Windy City beat Rockford, 8-1, to take three of four games from the RiverHawks.
The announced crowd of 4,481 surpassed both the paid crowd of 4,180 for a doubleheader against River City on Aug. 26, 2006 and the single-game record of 4,078 for the stadium opener against Evansville on May 31, 2006.
All-star shortstop Wes Long was 3-for-3 with three RBI for the âBolts.
In the first inning, Long doubled in a run and scored on Phil Hawke's single. Hawke made it a 4-1 game with a two-run double in the fifth inning.
The ThunderBolts put the game away with four unearned runs in the sixth inning and drove Rockford starter Brady Salter (2-2) from the game.
Windy City starter Billy Phillips pitched a rain-shortened complete game. Phillips (3-2) scattered a run on five hits. In the Rockford second inning, Alhaji Turay led off with a double and scored on Joey Huskins' single.
Turay extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Roberto Valiente was 0-for-2 and his streak ended at 15 games, the longest since Aaron McEachran tied a team record with a 19-game hitting streak two years ago.
The RiverHawks go on the road to Gateway and River City for a six-game trip, then have three games off for the Frontier League all-star break.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 15th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Some games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet.
