Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston RiverDogs President Mike Veeck is one of several authors featured in a new baseball publication entitled 108 Magazine. The publication, whose inaugural issue became available this summer, is a collection of baseball articles and memoirs celebrating the rich history and traditions of the game.

Veeck's article is entitled "Giving Doby More Credit Would Be a Good Start," and it focuses on the legacy left by Hall of Famer Larry Doby, the first African-American player in the American League who was signed by Veeck's Hall of Fame father, Bill Veeck. Veeck (the author) points out that Doby, the second man to break the color barrier behind Jackie Robinson, left behind a legacy that Major League baseball is dangerously close to letting go by the wayside and Veeck suggests ideas to help baseball reach inner city kids.

Veeck points out that Doby, who broke the color barrier with the Bill Veeck-owned Cleveland Indians in 1948, played in a time when the meshing of the leagues only happened twice a year - at the All-Star Game and the World Series - and that Doby is every bit as much the crusader and pioneer that Robinson was. He also points out that Doby was the second African-American Major League manager, behind the Indians' Frank Robinson.

A limited number of the inaugural issue of 108 Magazine is available at the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park souvenir store. Formore information on the publication log on to www.108mag.com.
