
Augusta Sweeps Hickory; Jackets Tally 51 runs over four games

More than 4,500 fans watched the Augusta GreenJackets score seven first inning runs en route to a 13-7 win over Hickory on Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Jackets scored in double figures for a third time in four games and completed the sweep scoring 51 runs on 60 hits during the series.
Augusta LF Ben Copeland led off the game hitting the first pitch of the contest for a homerun. Hickory starter Luis Valdez failed to make it out of first frame. Valdez allowed a two RBI triple to RF Mike Mooney, an RBI single to CF Antoan Richardson and a bases clearing triple to Copeland before being relieved by Jean Garavito. Copeland drove in four first inning runs and five in the game on a three for five night.
Valdez (3-2) allowed seven runs (two earned) on five hits in two-thirds of an inning in the loss. Meanwhile, Shairon Martis (4-4) worked five and two-third innings of four run, five hit ball to earn the victory.
After Augusta added single runs in the third and sixth innings, Hickory got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Martis allowed three straight singles to start the inning (after allowing just one hit in the first five innings). With one out and the bases loaded, Hickory RF Brad Corley hit a sacrifice fly to make it 9-1. Crawdad DH Jason Delaney followed with a run scoring single and catcher Chris Jones plated two with a single to make it 9-4.
After the âDads got a run in the bottom of the seventh getting within 9-5, both teams scored twice in the eighth. Augusta added two more in the ninth inning to make the final 13-7.
Crawdad 2B Shelby Ford had three hits in five tries and scored twice. Jones was two for two with three runs knocked in for Hickory. Augusta 3B Anthony Contreras went three for five with two runs scored and two driven in.
The Crawdads dropped their season worst fifth straight. Hickory is in Greensboro Saturday night at 7pm. Augusta travels to Asheville.
