Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - The Rome Braves fell to the Savannah Sand Gnats Friday night 7-4 in front of 3,630 fans at State Mutual Stadium.
Savannah jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, scoring both runs on errors. Rome put their first run on the board in the sixth as Cody Clark drew a walk, Manny Rodriguez singled, and Jamie Romak smacked an RBI single to right center to cut the Gnats' lead in half 2-1. Jordan Schafer stepped up to the plate to lead off the seventh and immediately sent a bomb (4) over the right field wall to tie the game at 2-2. Unfortunately for the Braves, Savannah added five runs in the eighth to pull away to a 7-2 lead. Rome's hopes were briefly revived in the bottom of the ninth as Jamie Romak led off with a home run (8) to left field. Derrick Arnold followed with a single and moved to third on a double off the left field wall from Schafer. Arnold scored on a fielder's choice to get the Braves within three, but Rome's remaining efforts proved fruitless as they fall to Savannah 7-4.
Rome reliever Jairo Cuevas (3-7) suffered the loss for the Braves, while reliever Jacobo Meque records the win for Savannah (1-1).
The Braves are on the road tomorrow to begin a three-game series with the Columbus Catfish. They will return to Rome on July 12th for game one of a four-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs. For ticket information call 706-378-5144 or log on to www.romebraves.com.
Roster Moves: The Braves have placed Robert Marcial on bereavement leave and infielder Jose Santos joins the club from Danville of the Appalachian League.
